North Berwick has a personal romance for us, and a place we return to and visit from time to time. It has also seen a massive rise in desirabiltity as a place to live from those days in the 80's, and by 2016 had overtaken St Andrews to be the most expensive seaside town in Scotland for properties.

As far as passing the test, a cappuccino bunch of converted shipping containers and a horsebox overlooking Canty bay, North Berwick, the Bass rock and the Kingdom of Fife beyond is a very nice venue.

Discovered Steampunk Coffee Roasters absolutely excellent, they roast the beans on the premises, and love the decor even in the WC! very industrial.

and here is the Bass Rock, as well as gannets and guano, it had a castle, and has a lighthouse built by one of the "Lighthouse Stevensons" from stone taken from the castle. Cropped up on POTD here

and in East Lothian Energy News
Torness Nuclear PowerStation is due to stop generating Electricity in 2028. Torness was expected to have a useful life of 25-30 years and came online in 1988. In 2016, that was extended to 2030, but subsequently Electricite de France announced that electricity generation would end at Torness in 2028.

EDF said that all of these dates depend on a range of factors including future inspections. Some reports of cracks being discovered predict an earlier shutdown may be necessary.

https://theferret.scot/first-cracks-fou ... r-reactor/
Meanwhile, Torness is the preferred location for "The Eastern Link Project", The Eastern Link is a proposed offshore electricity super highway that will link Torness to Hawthorn Pit and play a crucial role in supporting the growth of renewables. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 to enable the project to be fully up and running by 2027.

Scottish Power Energy Networks have this to say about it.
https://tornesseasternlink.com/home/
In order to enable us to deliver this crucial project, we need to build a new substation and converter station and lay underground cables and marine cables at our preferred locations in East Lothian. Torness is already an energy generating site and the landing site for major offshore wind farm connections, which are of national importance.

Two high voltage direct current (DC) reinforcements between east coast of Scotland and England are proposed – one of which will run from Torness in East Lothian to Hawthorn Pit in County Durham. The other cable will run from Peterhead to South East England. Both cables are necessary.

This project is being developed in partnership with National Grid the Transmission Owner for England and Wales.

We need some more contibutors...today is East Lothian day.....Prestonpans/Port Seton and all (but not Musselburgh that was in Midlothian in the days of the 92 Historic Counties of the United Kingdom we are using as our guide, Midlothian has its turn yet to come when 28 pops out of the random number generator :-D ).

If you can contribute please join in.

Dormouse wrote: 03 Jun 2022, 17:38 I was born and brought up in Prestonpans - and have relatives in Port Seton. None of them stay where you took the photo though. My cousin stays about 400 yards away and a friend I went to University with stayed about 100 yards away! 50 years ago though! He had a very distinctive Hammerite painted Riley Elf that I flared the steel arches on to clear the reverse rim Cooper wheels and 165 tyres!

Time for a random question (or 3) with not quite such an obvious answer!!: :-D

Who is this? What is special about him? What is his connection with East Lothian?

Minority sport day in the spotlight.....thought it might be a former golfer with East Lothian’s proliferation of golf courses, but it is in fact one of the legends of bowls, on a world scale. 8 gold medals at the world outdoor bowls championships, 8 times represented Scotland at the Come wealth games, Most capped Scottish bowler in history, and the oldest to compete at the commonwealth games.

Oh yes, and he was born in Haddington East Lothian.

One of the bits I enjoy about this thread is, if you take an active part you discover new things for yourself. It doesn't matter whether anyone else likes it or finds it interesting.

This morning from enjoying listening to a bit more Kathryn Tickell which I havent done for ages, old youtube auto played on to a streaming session from a group of fiddlers from Orkney called Fara, who appear to be pretty well travelled, and were set to go to Australia to take part in an event in 2020 but could not because of travel restrictions so did a live streaming session instead.

Where from....The Bellhaven Brewery in East Lothian.

Listen to it if you wish, I played the lot and enjoyed it , no hardship at all. Counts as my musical contribution for East Lothian for their performance in the County.
