That's Albert Lee Steve not the Ten Years After guitarist Alvin. Albert would be bang on topic for Herefordshire's Day in the spotlight we have already had. Nice enough though to have a distraction into Emmy Lou Harris, but no link I can manufacture into Montgomeryshire, as we have left Nottinghamshire behind now although I'm sure there is a tenous one we could devise :-D

What are the chances of Emmylou Harris actually singing a song with Montgomery in the title, huge odds against, but in a little bit of a spooky she did :-D

I think a link to our Welsh Montgomery in the spotlight to the youtube vid Steve posted up, would be even harder to find, and even more tenuous :-D Have a go if you like :!:

Here is a bit of history, of the Norman Conquest, and Montgomery. The Name for our County of the Day comes from the Calvados area of Normandy. Indeed Montgomeryshire is the only county of the United Kingdom to retain a Norman name.

This little blog post gives some detail of what happened before and after 1066. In my reading, all Montgomery reverences whether Citys, counties, towns, or clan Montgomery, including former Sunderland goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery stem from the Normandy roots.

There would appear to be a very solid music link between Led Zeppelin and Montgomeryshire:

Never afraid to miss...something to do with Houses of the Holy. :?:

and on another FCF Spooky and a minor tangent do you know which character Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery played in an iconic US TV Programme in the 60's. Her screen husband in the series got a sideways mention the other day on the Whatsthisthen? thread.

Surprisingly Montgomeryshire was also the starting place for what became a major fashion company:
BFTW
BFTW
The basics from Wiki:

Laura Ashley's first shop was opened at 35 Maengwyn Street, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, in 1961. The Laura Ashley association is commemorated by a small plaque. The shop sold locally produced honey and walking sticks as well as the couple's own products. Here Laura worked with a seamstress to introduce their first forays into fashion, producing smock like shirts and gardening smocks. The family lived above the shop until moving to Carno, Montgomeryshire. They first set up in the vacant social club, but moved in 1967 to the local railway station, which had been closed two years earlier.

I was reasonably close with Houses of the holy

The Machynlleth cottage that inspired Led Zeppelin

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-32335059

"As well as Led Zeppelin III, the material they wrote in Wales went into the untitled album, 'Houses of The Holy' and 'Physical Graffiti', and the style heavily influenced them from then on."

Another linky tangent. In passing I mentioned Jimmy Montgomery who I described as "the Sunderland Goalkeeper" and indeed he was a club stalwart, who made a tremendous double save in the cup final against Leeds and played 627 times for his hometown club. What I didn't know was that at the end of his career he was No2 Goalkeeper to Peter Shilton at Nottingham Forest (yes our previous County in the spotlight) and was on the bench in the 1980 European Cup Final against Hamburg and has a winners medal. Nice way to finish playing and literally couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke!

Yes you were on the trail with the Houses of the Holy but to be honest I hadn't a clue what you were talking about!! :-D Other than Stairway to Heaven I don't think I could name a Led Zeppelin track at all but I did know about Jimmy Page and Robert Plant!! Weird things memories!! :-D

As for Jim Montgomery, as I knew him, I remember watching him at White Hart Lane when my sister got free tickets. She was going out with a devoted Sunderland fan at the time and he was taking her to see them play Spurs but he had a family issue arise on the Friday and had to rush home to Sunderland leaving my sister with the tickets for the Park Lane stand. We were directly behind Jim when he made an astounding save of a long range effort from Hoddle. It was the year Spurs were in 2nd division and won promotion straight back up. :-D

But did you know that there were two Darrins? Played by two Dicks. Dick York to start of with for 5 years and then, after severe back pain forced York to leave, by Dick Sargent for the final 2 years.

At the time I didn't even clock the change. I was probably too young to notice as they were not too dissimilar to look at and they shared the same first name,
