Working my way around Fife I came across Newport on Tay which I find to be a very interesting place. So this picture is to whet your appetite and the link will whisk you away for a good 20 minutes of fascinating stuff!!

So who is he and what is he doing here?

Don't need a miracle to get that Darts Player Mick, that's the famous Jocky Wilson from Kircaldy. He's in the Queens Hotel Kirkwall Orkney in 1982.
https://orkneyarchive.blogspot.com/2012 ... chive.html
He was booked to play 20 local darts players for which he was to receive the handsome sum of £400. After the event Jocky told a local reporter that he had been a bit disappointed with his form on the night as he lost the first two games, but he did manage to beat the other eighteen!

For you statisticians out there during the whole event Jocky scored six 180s, sixteen 140s, eight 100 plus and sixty 100s.

Jocky is proudly showing his teeth in this photograph, every one of them false. Famously he had lost all his teeth by the age of 28 due to a combination of a love of sweets and a lack of brushing (take heed kids!) so when he won the World Championship he spent £1200 of his winnings getting some new ones made. He told a local reporter, however, that he removed them when he was playing darts because "the vodkas and coke don't taste right with them in".

I edited in a bit more about his trip to Orkney I found. The pint in his hand, and the accompanying spirits were his Achilles heel.

Stayed a couple of times at Kilconquhar exploring the Fife Coast.
geograph-1237423-by-James-Allan.jpg
Elie was closest, and it has the attraction of the possibility that you may find some Elie Rubies at the beach or in amongst the rocks and stones. Its a case of knowing what you are looking for and where to look. Didn't knowingly find any, they are a form of red garnet as opposed to being true rubies.

Video of the beachcombing etc here and doing a bit of silver casting to make a ring with their finds. It will help should we go searching because it does show you what to look for. Mostly tiny little specks of garnet eroded from the volcanic rock in amongst the gravels and stones.

I think the gem of the Fife fishing villages is Crail. NIce Cafe with a view and a steep drop out the window!

On the day I choose to post my picture of a flower on POTD, in a bizarre co-incidence probably the only town in the United Kingdom to have an art installation of the very same flowers on a roundabout is in today's County in the spotlight. Yes the Sculpture of giant irises (1988) by Malcolm Robertson in Glenrothes, Fife.

That could be Cupar in our County in the Spotlight Fife....like the Carlsberg qualification "probably".

When I did the enquiry, although Scotland does its best to exploit golf tourism, it probably hosts most of the top 10 oldest golf courses in the world 18 or 9 holes. There's us having a holiday near Elie and Earlsferry links and not realising 1, that they existed and 2, were in bronze medal position in the rank of the oldest golf courses in the entire world.
