Well, my (main) initials are JM, and my DOB is between 1932 and 1974, so that suits me nicely.

On the beer front, Westmorland has acquired this at Staveley, it moved from Hawkshead in 2006.

Hawkshead Brewery (don't be fooled-its not in Hawkshead any more but at Staveley nr Kendal) it does fall into the category of a nice place to stop off at.

You may spot a light blue MG there, I did :-D

What has Westmorland got on the Railway front.

To the East the Settle/Carlisle line winding its way through Kirkby Stephen and Appleby in Westmorland, and up the middle before it hits Penrith the West Coast Main Line, and it's famous bit over Shap much beloved of the youtube train enthusiast, especially with diesels churning out clag, and steam locos huffing and puffing up the incline.

The single Westmorland station on the main-line is Oxenholme, while Kirkby Stephen and Appleby have stations on the Settle To Carlisle Line. There is also branch line from Oxenholme to Windermere.

for the visuals a couple of you tube vids

Someone parked his PEC at a particular place in Kendal in the 1970's, and hey presto about 50 years on, gets its few minutes of fame on the FCF :-D

What do you reckon it is, some kind of Fiat :?:

Looks like a Fiat 130 to me with a Moggy van to the left and either an Escort estate or an Avenger estate in front, not quite sure! :-D

One of my trips to Ambleside was to install data logging equipment in a transport depot. My mate, who is now in Spain, was working for a logistics company writing the software for their movement control system and it required data logging boxes fitted at all their network of depots. I was running my car sourcing business at the time and it was very quiet so he got his boss to engage my services as a radio engineer to travel round the country installing the data loggers. I loved it because I was on the road for 17 days in all visiting 37 sites all over the country and staying in the best hotels all on expenses. The actual installations involved hanging the logger on the wall and then connecting it to the local computer via 6 wire twisted pair cable using RS232 interface - a doddle. Installations took 10 minutes to complete followed by 90 minutes monitoring and testing with HQ to ensure they were running correctly before I moved on.

One site was in Ambleside so I planned my route to complete that job by 18.00 and then be able to stay and have dinner at my favourite pub in Bowness. All went well until I was ready to leave the pub when I realised I had left my wallet in my toolbag in the van parked a 30 minute walk away. A negotiation with the landlord followed which resulted in him getting his wife to drive me to the van to get my wallet as I would not have time to walk there and back (I was beyond legal driving!) before closing time. Dangerous move in view of the fact that she was in her 60s with milk bottle bottom glasses and it was dark!!

Suffice to say that when we got there I paid her in cash and bade her goodnight, relieved at not having to endure the return trip!! Suitably lubricated I went into the hotel bar and passed a very pleasant hour discussing the relative differences between sailing and motor boating with the barman!! He was a land lubbing fisherman who found sailing inefficient and slow!! I tried to educate him but I don't think I made any difference. By the time we reached the last engine on the bar I was ready for bed so retired gracefully having recovered from my lift home!! :-D

What else does Westmorland have :?:

Probably the finest services on a motorway anywhere in Great Britain.
and quirkily owned by a local farming family, not one of the corporate motorway services giants.

Yes watched an episode the other night, showed the firm in the shadow of Blencathra who supply them with their coffee, and a bit about cordials for their soft drinks.
