Height Adjustment Front Rod Guide

Citroen XM but I expect the Xantia and even the BX have the same "spring" front rod guide on the manual height adjustment mechanism. I had removed part of the heatshield to gain access to the handbrake mechanism under the tunnel section and the guide fell out. I cannot for the life of me work out how it fits back in. Whatever way I arrange it, it doesn't stay in the heatshield hole. Help.

I popped a 2.5mm starlock washer on the end of the guide rod where it passed through the hole in the heatshield. Seems to look fine.
