I think you need to leave the ammeter on it for at least an hour or two & keep checking the reading isnt jumping up. The reading you are getting 0.04 amps is a completely normal current draw on this vehicle.

The 0.04A drain tolerance is normal ..and I happily accept that...
But the battery is still draining...even though the amp meter says it's ok.
This is what I cant understand.
I know that when I go out tomorrow to start the van it will either struggle badly or not start at all.
As I said earlier the battery is brand new.
It's doing my head in!

I'll wait until tomorrow and do a voltage test to see if any more power has drained from the new battery.
My reckoning is 0.02V p/h is draining somewhere....3 days and just about 1.5v has drained from the battery.....it definitely wont turn over at that level.
I can't understand why the Amp test is showing acceptable ranges but the battery is still discharging somehow?
I appreciate your advice about the methodical removal of fuses ..in fact I appreciate all your advice...but if it's not showing leakage/ current draw on the Amp test how am I to find the problem?..Clearly the voltage is draining from the battery albeit steadily.

Well....I'm surprised that I went out to check the voltage it was ...12.64..
I opened the van door ...checked the voltage (doors open)..12.64
Key in the ignition..glow plug lamp off ...and presto....fired up no problem.
With the engine running 14.5V
With the engine off...12.78V
I'm going to leave it for a week or so now....then try it again after it's been stood.
I'm hoping to put it back on the road in June...I just need it to be reliable.
I'll keep all you enthralled people informed!

A thought did occur to me that purely out of curiosity you could disconnect the negative lead from the battery and then measure the voltage with the battery open circuit. Then leave it like that and check the voltage again next day. If it has dropped it may indicate a standard leakage through the battery casing or even a damp atmosphere, just as a comparison with a connected reading!!
