Kinross-Shire Today's County in the spotlight

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Random Number is 47
County is Kinross-shire

2nd smallest County in the UK with just a handful of settlements with the biggest by far being Kinross Itself.

If you have travelled up the M90 you will have set wheels in Kinross-shire, and may have glanced across the expense of Loch Leven and seen the Castle on the Island.
View from the M90 looking East
View from the M90 looking East
Towns and villages
Carnbo, Cleish, Crook of Devon, Dalqueich, Drum, Easter Balgedie
Gairney Bank, Glenlomond, Keltybridge, Kinnesswood
Kinross (county town)
Milnathort, Scotlandwell, Wester Balgedie

Visited my friend's brother who lived at the time in Kinross so I have both set wheels and foot in Kinross and sampled its ales somewhere!

Let's get up in the Air at Balado Airfield just off the M90 and have a look at Kinross and Loch Leven
https://baladoairfield.co.uk/about
In 1942, having been requisitioned by the Air Ministry to support Britain’s war efforts, RAF Balado Bridge opened as a training facility for Spitfire and Hurricane pilots during WW2. After the war ended, the site was returned to its original owners and its connection to all things flying continued. From gliding and hot air ballooning to paragliding and microlights – this beautiful location continues to draw pilots from far and wide.

However, it wasn’t until 1997 that Balado Airfield truly took the international stage, becoming home to T in the Park music festival. Balado hosted audiences of up to 85,000 people enjoying performances from the likes of The Who, Blur, The Killers, Muse, Greenday, Beyonce, REM and Artic Monkeys. After 18 incredible years, and with countless memories, In 2014 we bid farewell to T in the Park ready to start a new chapter in Balado’s history.

Since then, a huge development plan has been underway to create a first-class flying facility for pilots, students and enthusiasts for decades to come. See you in the skies!

Here's the vital information for a find a vehicle with today's County in the spotlight area code on. Pre 74 please.

Kinross-shire has only one Vehicle Registration Area code, and the letters are...

I've been perusing my Cary's
https://archive.org/details/carysnewiti ... &q=kinross

Kinrossshire gets a few mentions

Kinross Town Hall was exactly 418 miles as measured in the survey from Shoreditch Church
The Thistle Inn at Keltie Bridge (ie Keltybridge now)
The Thistle and Crown Inn at Kinross 4 furlongs along from the Town Hall
The Red Lion in at Mills of Forth (now known as Milnathort) 1 mile 6 furlongs from Kinross Town Hall

I'll see if any survive under original or new names.

I'm not absolutely sure but I think it was "Kinross registered cars before 1974" Failing that it was "SV number plates" and then view the image results.

My registrations bible does not have a lot to offer on SV's but here is what there is:

As expected modern times have obliterated any further reference to antiquity than "it used to be a 17th or 18th Century Coaching Inn" on some of the current establishments like the Kirklands Hotel, The Salutation Hotel, The Green Hotel and Golf and Leisure Resort, or The Muirs Inn. The old names have gone.

Useful old maps website is this https://maps.nls.uk/scotland/?msclkid=9 ... 1779581c23
Followed the Great North Road Route through Kinross as per Cary's info on the 6 inch to 1 Mile OS map.

One thing I have learnt with a little surprise is that Kinross-shire has no railway stations at all, which, bearing in mind there is a railway serving Perth to the north, I find a trifle odd! :(

Extract from the Wiki page:

Transport

Kinross-shire is bisected north–south by the M90 motorway, which links Kinross to Perth in the north and Dunfermline in the south. The A911 enables west to east travel across the county.

There are no train stations; previously there was one at Kinross however this is no longer open.
