Apart from the Butterfly Farm, Rutland Water has a huge amount to offer and is well worth the trip. I'd recommend a weekend stay in Oakham with time to take in all the things Rutland has to offer: :-D

Rutland is surprisingly productive :-D

Cary's has the story of the Horseshoe custom at Oakham.

I like the roadside Historic Inns mentioned in Cary's, especially when 200 plus years later they are still there and still trading.

Mentioned for Oakham The Crown and The George

Here's The Crown

Another pleasant town in Rutland is the enchantingly named Uppingham! With traditional shops and pubs it is an ideal destination for a day trip:

The other Inn mentioned in Cary's for Oakham was the George.

Now this joins a pretty large set of historical pubs which have had their history effectively extinguished by 21st century marketing.

It now has a terrible name and the George bit is relegated to the title of the restaurant. Look at the website and there isn't a shred of its history mentioned.

Fortunate then that it remains a listed building so a great expanse of glass cannot be installed to turn it into further 21st century anonymity.

Eventually out pops a FP plate. Very tricky to search for two letters in a car numberplate, and produce results.

So a British Pathe film of the Oakham Pageant 1947 in the parade produces FP4295 registered in Rutland with the message draped over its front.-
