Buteshire had a number of flags proposed and my choice is :

The other options can be found here.

There are many places spread across the islands, so to discover potential research sites it may be worth checking the wiki list:

That shows my geoignorance up well. I have always thought that Holy Isle was off the East coast.
My wife and her mother went there on a bus trip. She said she had never been so bored as then.
Except it was Holy Island, which is right where I thought it was.

Buteshire is going to be a bit of a challenge, but lets still get a bit of participation.

I'll go for a second personal connection....the paddle steamer Waverley. Enjoyed a good value trip from Amble to Edinburgh (Leith) via Eyemouth past the Bass Rock and a coach back to Amble some years ago now.

For part of the year it plies its trade in and around the Clyde and the islands of Bute.

I too have had a trip on the Waverley, though I can't remember exactly when. It must have been prior to 2006 when I met SWMBO as I was accompanied by a previous aquaintance   . Our trip took us from Southampton around the Isle of Wight and back, a very pleasant way to pass an autumn evening!! :-D

I remember when rock was young
Me and Susie had so much fun
Holding hands and skimming stones
Had an old gold Chevy, a place of my own
But the biggest kick I ever got
Was doing a thing called the...

Having never actually trodden on Buteshire soil it is tricky to post up any thoughts, other than the one which did occur to me, had it only consisted of three islands, would they have named it Tributeshire? :sulk: :-D

I am exceedingly surprised. Given its sparsity of population I didnt think the historic county of Buteshire would have its own registration area code but it does, and from 1903 to 1974 it was

SJ

So the taskette should anyone choose to accept it, is to find a vehicle (pre-74 please) with the reg SJ as the area code on it. Too much perhaps, to expect another bullseye with SJ1, although I'm sure at the time SJ1 the first car registered in Bute, would at the time be a newsworthy event. Surely all the "roads" on the islands would have been cart tracks and no motor spirit infrastructure , and the first owner would have to have been pretty well-heeled :-D
Wonder what the charging infrastructure is like for leccy cars in Buteshire now :-D I will have a look!

The Victorians knew a thing or two about toilets, about glazed tiles, marble wash basins and high level cisterns and ostentatious urinals :-D

Rothesay has a surprising gem, worth a selection of pics from Geograph contributor Thomas Nugent

You should be able to navigate the half a dozen pics from this link by clicking on the "next" right arrow.

Sort of related to the county.

Back in 1964 I used to buy TV21 comic which had Stingray as the main colour strip on the centre pages. One of the other strips was Lady Penelope and one story line involved Lady Penelope solving riddles in rhyme form. The only bit I can remember for sure was "Two Rs, two As and an N, that's the style", which of course referenced Arran. Successive weeks then saw Lady P and Parker going round the island solving further clues. I remember there being a stone circle I think?

Anyway, the final episode of the storyline saw the introduction on the Thunderbirds characters and Lady P had been set these challenges to prove that she was worthy to join their organisation. At that point Thunderbirds took over as the main strip over the centre pages whilst Stingray moved to some of the other inside pages, still in colour though. This coincided, more-or-less, with the premiere of the series on TV.

Later on Lady P left TV21 in her own eponymous spin-off comic. This comic was aimed at girls (bleurgh) but I still bought it for the strips that they ran. For instance TV21 had The Man from Uncle so Lady P had The Girl from Uncle. The comic later shortened its title to just Penelope but I think I may have stopped buying it by then.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Inside every old person is a young person wondering what the hell happened.

Excellent contribution Paul, I enjoyed that. I remember TV 21. If I can dig out an image I'll put it up on the Remember these All our yesterdays thread. If I stumble upon the "Arran episodes" its going on this thread here :-D
