Thoughts on fuel additives?

Post by H4wkeye »

Was recently reading up online about various fuel additives and was wondering has anyone used them here? Particularly for diesel. Was looking at some of the Wynns line-up.

Do they help? Should they be used occasionally?

You shouldn't need them if you opt to fill up with a tank of premium diesel every month or so as the premium fuels contain additional additives and cleaners to keep the system in good condition.

Otherwise use a decent safe additive for HDIs with DPF systems and maybe treat a tankful every 3 months or so. I think the STP and Wynnes have several treatments covered in one bottle.

I prefer to fill up a tankful of premium diesel every month or 2 (depending on your mileage and how many times you fill up a month) and don't bother with additives.

Thanks Marc. Normally one full tank will last me a month. Sometimes 1.5. I was looking at this one from Wynns:

We used to joke in the trade about them, they're rarely worth the price, Holts used to be the main lot and one of the jokes was "You need a can of Holt's liquid engine."

I did use one a year back when the C3 was waiting a week for a sale. It wasn't being used at the time and I took it for a little run and had a few splutters / hesitation, so got back and shoved some STP diesel fuel treatment in and went for a boot up the hill when it started on a massive splutter, so I floored it and whatever it was it cleared it out and never had another issue. Maybe some crap in the fuel tank had worked its way through.

Personally I've never used them but I've driven petrol engine cars for like 10 years. C5 is my first diesel so I'm treating it like a baby. :-D

Guess I'll try some Wynns total cleaner thing at some point. But first gonna top up some premium diesel

I used Forte products professionally for years, "it does what it says on the tin". https://www.forteuk.co.uk/product-categ ... el-system/

Agreed Forte is good stuff, my 65 plate 330k Peugeot boxer failed its mot on emissions, a dose of FDT cleaned it up and to be fair was more responsive at lower rpm's after a bottle had gone through the tank, I usually steer well clear of any additives but I guess every now and again don't hurt.

Cheers. I think we have Forte here too, though the most popular ones and available everywhere are Wynns and Liqui Moly. I reckon they work well too.
