Hi.
I have a 2008 automatic C3 with a strange issue.
After about 10 minutes of driving along a dual carriageway there is a whistling noise (sounds like someone blowing through panpipes) sounding like it is coming from the back. It comes and goes so can be going for a few minutes then nothing then back for a few seconds or minutes and on some rare journeys it doesn't happen at all. The sound seems to be affected by bumps in the road (changes pitch slightly) and if changing lanes it changes the loudness while moving across. It also only seems to happen at high speeds. The garage I took it to confused me. They called me to say it is wear in the gearbox so nothing they can do but when I went to collect it another person said it was the wheel bearing but it wasn't too bad so they didn't change it and it will need changing in a few months.
I initially thought it was a wheel bearing but as it doesn't always make a noise I am not sure now.
Does anyone have any ideas? Any comments would be gratefully received.

Re: Whistling noise
I second the rear wheel bearings. The noise can vary according to speed and may be more accentuated when moving to the left or right - you are less likely to hear the noise at lower speeds.
It's coming on for 14 years old now - what sort of mileage do you have on it? Our 2007 manual was just starting to do this at 51k miles just before we sold it. It was only noticeable once getting to about 40 MPH and over and more like a humming sound.

Re: Whistling noise
Hi Marc.
Thank you for your reply. It's done about 60000 miles.
I think I will book it in at another garage to get the bearing changed.

Re: Whistling noise
Good idea - they'll both need doing of course at the same time, but I'm sure you know that.
