LDS Fluid

Post by FlyMike_88 »

Hello all!

I recently checked my LDS fluid levels and it would seem it is below minimum. Having read abs searches the forum, I’m confused as to what fluid I actually need. Halfords/Eurocarparts etc do not seem to have anything suitable.
Any help appreciated!

The dealer will have it of course but eBay do - I bought my last lot from there, actually from ECP through eBay, came from Germany.

Amazon have it too

Hello again,

The story continues.......

I've order the LDS from amazon which will arrive tomorrow.

I've inspected underneath the car and it would seem the steering rack (actually a joint) is leaking oil and it can be seen dripping down. Here is the video [url]]

So the question, has my steering rack gone or can the joint be resealed? My steering rack has been absolutely fine with no issues so I was surprised to see this.

It all makes sense as I believe the suspension and steering fluid is from the same tank and if the steering rack had a leak, the suspension would bring up a fault.

Appreciate the thoughts and hopefully the links work.

Unfortunately I think it's time for you to join the X7 failed Steering rack club. Fluid leaking from this area likely indicates the rack, but to be certain you need to check the pinion seal or the power steering pipes from the rack.

You may get a better top down view of the pinion if you observe through the inside steering column floor seal grommet.

Ouch, I did begin to think this after reading through the forum. As an estimate, what’s the ballpark price for this repair/replacement? From reading, the pinion seal cannot be repaired.

Typical now that most garages are now shut until Tuesday!

Racks are scarce because of the renowned problem, but there are places that provide refurbished racks, and who coat them afterwards to help prevent corrosion.

There are 2 types of rack so be careful as the steering angles are different depending on model. If this is for your X7 VIN ending 864 then you'll need a 180° rack.

Most of us have either had our racks refurbished or exchanged for one already done. The high and low pressure PAS pipes are no longer available from Citroen (a disgrace really), so be very careful.

Most of all this is covered in several topic including one I started with plenty of others chipping in and also covers the modification we have done to help prevent future issues.

Thanks Marc, the car is booked in to a good garage on Tue and I’ll look to get the steering rack replaced.

To be honest, the car has been very reliable for me generally. In the two years of ownership (40k miles done), I’ve only had the wiper motor go which I replaced myself. Overall, it’s been a very comfortable car and excellent value for money. Once the rack has been sorted, hopefully I’ll get another good 2+ years from the old girl!
