Re: Today's County in the spotlight
Something we haven't come across in any previous county, and maybe not everyone's idea of interesting information, is one of the country's detention centres. Aylesbury Prison gives us that opportunity as it does come with an interesting history as you will discover if you follow the link below:

For the benefit of our non UK resident members here is a location map showing where Buckinghamshire is within England and a second map showing the main places in Buckinghamshire:

One of the popular tourist locations in Bucks is Bekonscot, the world's oldest model village. First how about a miniature train ride?

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
As a 13 year old my family summer holiday was spent in Kent at a B&B where I met my first real girlfriend. Her family were staying in the same place and after spending a fortnight following her around I plucked up courage to ask where she lived. It turned out that her father was the head gardener at Waddesdon Manor and they lived in the gate lodge of the Manor.
So on the first day back in Watford I jumped on my bike and road along the A41 through Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Tring, Aston Clinton and Aylesbury to get to her house to see where she lived. I knew she would not be in as they were due to come home from Kent the week after us but I wanted to know how long it would take!! Well it took an hour and three quarters so I realised that the only practical way of seeing her would be to go for the weekend. Once she got home we exchanged a few letters until the first weekend arrived. I saw a lot of her but not a lot of the Manor however it was a memorable year
Information about the Manor here.

Another fascinating place in Buckinghamshire with a history going back over 5500 years is Princes Risborough. The link below will give you some of the history including how it got its name!

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
There are so many places of note in Buckinghamshire surely others must have some contributions to make? From Newport Pagnell the home of Aston Martin and Citrojim, through Milton Keynes and Zel's place on to Great Missenden, home of The Missenden Flyer, to High Wycombe and West Wycombe with the Hellfire Caves. Another of the places I enjoy a visit to is Bletchley Park where we won the Second World War from. Fascinating insight into the world of espionage and code breaking:

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
I have a niece in High Wycombe. Never been there though.
Only been to Jim's, Milton Keynes, Bishops Stortford, St. Neots, Little Horwood and Drayton Parslow because it is so close to the (real) name of Ambrosia Parsley.

Re: Pembrokeshire in the spotlight
I had no idea so asked SWMBO who said the princess had taken one called Susan on honeymoon but she didn't think it was the first. So I DDG'd and discovered she was quite right and the first one was called Dookie, after Queen Charlotte apparently!NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑18 Apr 2022, 08:46 Happy Easter Monday!
