Orange "Service" light reset?

Post by tizdaz »

Hi guys, when i start my C4 Grand Picasso (2014) the orange "SERVICE" warning lamp lights up & stays on. Ive tried to reset it by holding down the trip counter & then pressing the Start/Stop button, this resets the spanner icon and miles until next service etc. But the orange service light is still on!?

A friend has told me that this can only be reset using a diagnostic tool, is this correct?

There is no warning sound or any other message on dash etc, while driving only the orange service light is lit on my dash?

Don't know about your car but it might be just telling you something needs topping up, the screen-wash bottle for instance.

In your case if the SERVICE warning light remains fixed without an associated warning lamp or message on this vehicle, it means there is a major problem that has no associated warning and needs a diagnostic with dealer-level kit to find the problem. So check when you start the vehicle again for any messages on the display.

Normally a message or additional warning lamp will be lit for opening of a door, the boot or bonnet, low engine oil level, low screenwash/headlamp wash fluid level, - discharged remote control battery, low tyre pressures, -saturation of the particle emission filter or additive top up needed etc.

It could be something to do with the emission system, like the EGR valve blocked for example or something else related to the fuelling system, so needs a proper diagnostic.

should the "Passenger Airbag ON" light up on dash when car starts, this goes off after a few seconds, but it also shows up with an X through it?

I do remember a while ago i was getting a seatbelt tensioner error, so i paid for electrical diagnosis & it came back that the plug under the passenger seat was faulty, a electrician did a "quick fix" (cleaned the contacts etc) and its been fine since, but could this have something to do with it?

think this is the one that comes up, right next to a message saying "PASSENGER AIR BAG ON"

If you switch the air bag off that light will come on all the time to remind you it is disabled.

hi guys,

ok i taken my car to my local garage, he hooked it up to a diagnosis system, and this came up: P1435 Multiplexed Additive Pump: Can Network Fault or Pump Fault.

He also was looking for the Adblue tank to see if it needed topping up, but after a search & where the tank refill cap usually is (under 3rd row rear seat) he popped the cap off only to be greeted with a hole straight to the road! which he then said that the system my car uses means i have to replace whole tank as it isn't refillable (or something along those lines) he also said that the "service" error warning lamp on dash will be because the pump has probably failed & the diagnosis came back with a reading of less than 600 miles of adblue left.

He said that the part is from main dealer only and will cost around £1000!? (he is going to get prices and let me know).

So a few questions.. Does my car 100% use Adblue? I googled and info i found says that citroen cars began using this system in 2015? my car is 2014 plate & i can see no mention of AdBlue in the Handbook Manual?

If my car does use this adblue. if only 600 miles left why no warning light on dash which its supposed to do, all I'm getting is an orange service light?

Any info much appreciated!

Thanks

EDIT:

also where is the fill up point for the Adblue, i was to believe it was under the 3rd row back seats (driverside) I've checked, and i see the access hole cap, i remove cap and then there is just a hole with no inner tank!?

Post up the VIN and we can check, but if you've had it a while and not put any in, then unlikely it is E6 with AdBlue. The filler on early cars was at the rear, RHS when the RHS seat was lifted. On later cars it moved to in front of the RH rear seat (a right PITA to get to!). It sounds to me more like it's the Eolys additive pump that is at fault, but that still might be expensive....!

Here is my VN:
VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

i had another look in the boot for access, when i lift rear seat, there is an access hole on the right hand side right near the bumper, when i remove the cover, then there is just a hole (no tank) There is also what looks like another access hole as you mention Infront of the seat, but when i remove the circle piece of carpet, there is no hole or anything, just the metal of the chassis, it looks like this is where a hole could be made for other models, but not in mine.

Its quite shocking how poorly designed the 2014 GP model is. Everything is as difficult as it can be, even simple maintenance tasks!

I've decided I'm going to try and get this issue fixed and then move on from this vehicle! With prices the way they are at the moment i can get a decent price which will help minimise my losses. .I've had nothing but issues with it since i bought it around 12 months ago from a dealer (luckily it came with 6 month warranty) as in the first 6 months it needed a whole lot of repairs, including Clutch/Turbo/Headlamp/Seat Belt Tensioner/Boot Struts & then since then I've also spent around another further £1000+ on other repairs/diagnostics etc!! ..i wouldn't mind but the car was on 38000 miles, my old car which was a 57 plate Grand Picasso was flawless, served me well for 7-8 years which is why i decided to upgrade (or should i say Downgrade!!) to a new model. It just seems like Citroen took a huge step backwards with this model and as such i will probably never go near another Citroen again!, even the layout compared to my 57 plate GP is much worse. Anyway rant over! lol :(

Sorry about that, I'm just fed up as every week pretty much I've had an issue with this GP!

I spoke to Citroen earlier, ive got my car booked in for a full diagnostic next week, i asked them about the Adblue over the phone, the mechanic was stumped when i told them there is just a hole where the Adblue tank/fill cap should be! so he just said when i take it next week they will see what's what.

Another thing ive been thinking of (this may sound ridiculous!!) that the actual Adblue tank has either literally come loose and fell off while I've been driving as the error only started a few days ago, and i do a lot of driving at night, The car is quite noisy so to be honestso i would not have notice if it actually came loose and dropped off if i was driving at speed on motorway at night etc!! when i looked underneat to where the tank should, it seems like there are a couple of brackets that look bent & have no bolts in them!? ..the other thing is would somebody actually steal the tank!? again i know it sounds ridiculous, but the tank is 100% not there & it should be lol, and the prices of these things new are around the £1000 mark :( But them you will probably be thinking if either of these was the case, then i would have had some kind of error regarding the Adblue level being low on my dash... which brings me to my next point...

When i taken my car today to local garage, he ran a diagnosis & it did come back to say that the Adblue level was down to 600 miles! which is probably why the "SERVICE" light is on my dash? Just seems a bit of a coincidence that this light came on just a few days ago, the Adblue level is at 600 miles & the Adblue tank is no where to be seen under my chassis! :(

Thanks again guys for all your help so far regarding the issues I've had!

on a side note (i know this is a French Car forum) but if i was to buy another vehicle, i would like one similar size to the GP, any of you guys recommend one, the one I've been leaning towards is the VW Touran but they are very pricey compared to the GP, so the other thing I've been thinking of is a Toyota Vellfire which is import which id probably buy from a dealer, early days yet so I'm just getting as many options together as i can! ..thanks again!!

Most annoying thing with all of this, is i was planning to drive to Poland with my partner who is Polish so she can see her family as she hasnt seen them for the past 2 years due to Covid etc, we want to drive as we are taking our pooch with us! ..so i had everything booked, Train/B&B in Germany etc, i was just keeping my fingers crossed that my car would hold out just for a couple of weeks, then this happened!! so now im going to have to cancel everything and then re-arrange at a later date when we get car sorted, my partner is pretty gutted as you can imagine as her family were also looking forward to seeing her which was meant to be end of this month! but thanks to this contraption of a car its now a no go! :(

No Selective Catalytic Reduction (AdBlue) system on this vehicle, just Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Eolys Additive Tank for the DPF, so I'd change your garage / mechanic if he doesn't know the difference between Adblue for the SCR and Eolys Additive for the DPF - they are completely separate systems!

You have a Euro 5 Vehicle.

Hi Marc, thanks for for the info, I rang Citroen up again today and this time they said the same as what you say above after i mentioned it to them!

Thinking back yesterday, my local garage mechanic may have said it was an additive tank but i was getting confused as he mentioned Adblue tank also etc.

...UPDATE: Just literally got off the phone to Citroen & also my local garage, Citroen have said they have had a few cars in for a repair which was due to a faulty sensor to do with same issue i have, but they wont know for sure until they run the diagnosis on it next Wednesday which is when its booked in.

My local garage have also confirmed my car does not have an Adblue tank, so the new tank & pump he referred to was the Additive tank (which the pump comes fitted to it) ..so they quoted £500 to have the tank replaced with a new one which includes the fitting/filling up with fluid & labour etc.

So in worse scenario (if Citroen do confirm that it is a faulty pump on the additive tank) then its going to cost me £500 which is at least £500 less than initial thoughts if it was an Adblue tank!

The best scenario though is if the diagnosis confirms that the issue is a faulty sensor which I'm guessing will cost much less than £500!?

Anyway, time will tell! ...thanks again guys :)

Ok so today was the day for the Diagnosis @ Stoneacre Citroen Dealership in Wallasey,

Just to recap, i was told by my local garage that the reason for the orange service light was my car needed a new additive pump, but these are not sold separately and are fixed to the tank, so basically i was told i needed a new additive tank & was quoted £505 fitted.

I would like to also add that i do not think the garage was trying to "scam" me as such, as the mechanic did a few different tests including his diagnosis machine did say that the Multiplexed Additive Pump was faulty or a Can Network Fault. (Code P1435)

Anyway Citroen ran there diagnosis & they could see zero issues. They reset the orange light which has now gone. Citroen said sometimes the single orange warning light can pop on for any reason, in the past a common reason is a drop in the voltage from the battery for whatever reason.

Now the other thing that got me thinking, when this service light came on i was rattling my brain if i did anything particular to trigger it. And i remember one thing i did do was replace the interior bulbs with LED bulbs & when i did i remember 2 of these bulbs were faulty as i blew the fuse twice in a matter of minutes when fitting them! Now going back to the diagnosis that my local garage did which said "Can Network Fault" I'm guessing this means "Canbus" network fault, so maybe, just maybe that when these bulbs blew the fuse twice in a short period it messed up the Canbus a little triggering the orange Service light? Who knows?

Even though i don't think my local garage was trying to scam me, i still think how close i came to paying £500+ for something i didn't need! ..now along with my other problems in the recent past (heater blower etc) which again i was given a mis-diagnosis from same garage. All in all i would have spent over £1500 when the fix actually cost £89 for the diagnosis at Citroen & then 15 mins for removing a leaf from my heater blower!

Anyway, main thing is, for now my C4 is running good "touch wood" ..but it kind of sucks that whenever i get an issue then 9/10 times I'm going to have to book it in at Citroen for a diagnosis as it seems local garages diagnosis isn't too great.

During the diagnosis i asked if there was any other faults & they said that everything looked all clear, only thing he did point out was my rear NS tyre needed replacing! :D

So yup, from now on i guess its Citroen dealership for diagnosis, because if i hadn't took my vehicle to Citroen for a diagnosis on the 2 occasions i have, then at present i would have spent well over £2.5k in repairs that did not need doing (turbo/heater blower unit/additive tank/Seat belt tensioner etc) :(

It's a shame Citroen don't do a loyalty scheme for diagnosis! id be right up there! lol :(

Anyway thanks for help guys regarding this issue i had :)

Thanks for the update. In most cases you'll find the dealer should be better equipped in both diagnostic equipment and training for their own vehicles which is why they are more expensive as they have to train all the staff continually on new models, new systems and have to have the latest diagnostic kit on lease.

In this case it definitely looks like they have potentially saved you a lot of money. A diagnostic is always the first place to start, but has to be balanced and factored in with real-world knowledge of the systems as there can be a knock-on cause and effect from other systems that can trigger faults that may not be directly to a specific bit of hardware. If you get a good dealer that you are happy with, stick with them.

Stoneacre are not a Citroen dealer, Windsors of Wallasey are. So was that a slip of the name or is a non-Citoen specialist doing work?

Maybe Stoneacre are sending your car to Windsors? Is that possible?
