Beeswing has an Interesting War Memorial

This window,

This stained glass window is an unusual WW II War Memorial. It is inside the former church at Beeswing. Anyone can visit the building to see the window but try to make arrangements beforehand. The window was designed by Douglas Hamilton. It was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday 5th September 1948.

Good effort Mick I had to resort to poetic licence to save the out of area drive!

Having had a little delve into the Armchair Quest number 5, I think a little poetic licence is called for.
First enquiry indicated there were cinemas of the large variety in Ayr and Carlisle.

Castle Douglas does have a volunteer run Cinema and theatre but as you might expect Monday night aint one of the nights its open. So for a moment we will suspend reality and imagine all the delights of Wednesday's performance will be available as a special showing this evening, and the delightful little theatre will be packed to the rafters.

...and why not as Barry Norman used to say.

As I don't have a Tardis at my disposal I have to use the MX3 to drive out of area rather than a De Lorean to drive out of time!! :-D

Here's my nice-rusty patina bridge for armchair quest 1
Loch Ken Viaduct
This masonry and iron viaduct was built in 1860 to carry the Portpatrick Railway. The line was closed in 1965 and the bridge is closed to pedestrians for safety reasons.

Armchair Quest 2/3 Best place name after Beeswing, has to be Kirkpatrick Durham and the Drovers Inn in the village will do for the Pub. Reminds me of a more sober version of "The Jolly Drovers" at Leadgate Co. Durham.

Armchair Quest Number 4...

On an Old Coaching Inn in Castle Douglas, Yes most places may warrant a name check on the board, with the exception of Huntingdon.... :?:
Old Milestone by the A713, King Street, Castle Douglas, Kelton Parish
By the A75, in parish of Kelton (Stewartry District), let into the wall of the "Douglas Arms", an old coaching inn.

Castle Douglas has a number of interesting mileposts
In Castle Douglas on the A713 at the north east end of the town near the A745 junction. Outside the National Farmers Union offices. This post is between Gatehouse of Fleet (G 15) and Dumfries (17¾) J Affleck's foundry was based in Maxwelltown on the west side of the River Nith near Dumfries. One of the Mail Trust posts which may explain why the mileage to London was important.

Always take an interest in old coaching routes/inns and this is a big resource of info but a bit difficult to trace through.

Here's an example of a route from Portpatrick to Northampton, passing through Castle Douglas.

Am I right in thinking that the distance columns on the right are miles and furlongs? :-D

It occurs to me that as we approach the end of our time with Kirkcudbrightshire we should always leave time for reflections: :-D

Yes. Those particular distances are measured to/from Hicks Hall (in London) Various other locations in London are also shown in the book. Also shows the Stage Coach and Mail Coach Routes, the inns they call at and the notable "estates" passed on the route. Its a bit awkward to navigate on screen.

Here's a Hertford small gem from its pages.
Spoiler: show
Put in Hertford or anything else in the search box and it finds every mention in the book. eg try this
https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=sZ1 ... rd&f=false

Looks like if you were heading home by coach from London you would have had to make your way to No 90 Bishopgate Within, and Board Coach number 96 going to Hertford, Ware, Hoddeston, Hertingfordbury,
Broxburn and Wormley. Daily at 7.00 a.m. afternoon 4.30, Sunday 7.00 a.m.
As for Kircudbrightshire here's a page outlining part of the route from Northampton to Portpatrick passing through Kircudbrightshire.

My question on Kirkcudbrightshire is what's the correct pronunciation? I do know but does anyone else?
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.
