Re: Today's County in the spotlight
Interesting story featuring Mike d'Abo the lead singer of Mannfred Mann in the 1960's who wrote Handbags and Glad Rags.
The Lincolnshire connection right at the end of the piece they feature another of his compositions which is very well known....except that he did use the Lincolnshire Poacher for the tune...
Regards Neil

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
Was it intentional that I got the Fudge advert?
Rewound it and got the whole thing after that though.

Yes Steve the Fudge advert is set to the tune of the Lincolnshire Poacher, and the fudge advert "jingle" was put together by Mike d'Abo based on that folk tune, and is probably the most well known rendition of the tune.

Kirkcudbrightshire
Well my first thought was Where in Scotland is it?
Followed by where is it near?
So what is its flag like?
Further details here.
And Where can I search on to find out more?
Finally what does it look like?
So now you can go and see what you can find!!

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
My personal knowledge of this county is about the same as my knowledge of the eating habits of the Outer Mongolian tree toad (if there is such a thing! ) so I have no anecdotes to contribute. I had a look at the wiki page which told me all I need to know, really, so I shall be interested to read other's stories.
For ease of access the wiki page is here!!

Come on Mick sharpen your pencil, as resident Formula 1 aficionado in my eyes, quite an obvious Kircudbrightshire connection jumped out of the Wiki page.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 12:45 My personal knowledge of this county is about the same as my knowledge of the eating habits of the Outer Mongolian tree toad

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
Indeed it does Neil, well spotted. I will confess to not having read that section of the page as I jumped down to the extensive and attractive gallery. I can say that DC has never really impressed me either as a driver or a presenter, although I don't question his expertise. He just seems to exhibit a slightly aloof air which puts me off. Together with Johnny Herbert they would have made great bookends for the infamous Frost Report three men sketches:NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 13:28Come on Mick sharpen your pencil, as resident Formula 1 aficionado in my eyes, quite an obvious Kircudbrightshire connection jumped out of the Wiki page.mickthemaverick wrote: ↑11 Apr 2022, 12:45 My personal knowledge of this county is about the same as my knowledge of the eating habits of the Outer Mongolian tree toad

Re: Today's County in the spotlight
A little trivial trail I have been on, starting off in Kircudbrightshire and ending up with The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem written by William Coombe and illustrated by artist Thomas Rowlandson's color plates.

Yes its a little village in Kircudbrightshire, and I like an unusual name, particularly as I know what a beeswing is, or more precisely I knew what/who Beeswing was, a very famous racehorse round Northumberland.

The entry in the Ordnance Survey Object Name Book, written in 1847, states:
"A row of houses in good repair having a garden attached to each. The property of Jas. McLeod of Drumjohn. The name originates from one of the houses being used as a public house and having for its sign board the likeness of a famed racehorse called the Beeswing."
