C5 (2007) leaky rear cylinder

Unread post by trapa57 »

Hi All,

My 2007 C5 estate recently sprung a leak from the rear o/s suspension unit between the sphere and the suspension cylinder and quickly pumped out much of the hydraulic fluid. I am aware of this fault having experienced the same on a Xantia but my imminent house move added some urgency to getting it repaired. I had it transported to a local (to my new address) garage and sourced a s/h unit, new seal and rubber boot to effect a repair. I collected the car yesterday and there was a mention of a little leak from the rubber boot which then manifested itself after a 2 mile drive home. I depressurised the system, checked the fluid level (overfilled, nearly to the top of the filler neck) and have since disconnected the battery, then reconnected following the correct process (obviously not done by the garage).
I suspect leakage past seals within the cylinder (I haven't disassembled one but......) and I am not in a hurry to return the C5 for the garage to have another go, although it is going back fairly soon as they reversed it into a 4 post ramp making a hole in the boot lid (at least they owned up to that)

Apologies everyone, I realise this is not a new topic but I would appreciate some wise words as I have the usual mix of work, post house move 'stuff' and older parental support to balance. I intend to:
1. jack up then support the car on axle stands under the sills.
2. Remove the suspension cylinder (if needed) to be able to disassemble it and check/replace internal seals (not the one between the sphere and cylinder, that is now not leaking). Or can the seals be accessed in situ?
3. Reassemble, etc, etc.

Any thoughts, observations, etc would be most welcome.

Have a look at the thread here and my post that shows the seals in case that helps. The seals are still available from Citroen on the diagrams shown:

Hi Marc, thanks (as always) for the rapid reply and good info. I have sourced the three seals which are shown on the diagram but now I have finally got round to the job I can only find two original ones in the cylinder?? One is an o ring and the other is a thin, square section seal. I can see three channels in the outside the cylinder but I am pretty sure one is for incoming LDS. Can someone explain what goes where?
Thanks,
Paul
