Replacing the interior door storage light on C5

Post by H4wkeye »

Hello! Does anyone know how to replace the interior door storage lights on the C5? The ones that are activated when you pop your hand inside the door storage. Or which bulbs go there even. Cheers. :-D

No, these are LED units integrated into the wiring as far as I can see, and not replaceable. I'd be surprised these have gone as they should rarely be used unless you have things int he door pockets moving about so they are constantly on at night.

Oh gotcha. I am not even sure if I have them, but there is a small hole at the top so I reckon that's for the light. In any case, it is not a big deal the other lights all work.

I've got another question, I need to replace the R5W lights that are on the trunk, I've managed to unhook them but I can't figure out how to take the little holder that holds the lights, there is not enough space to pop them out. Do you need to take the whole light assembly out or? I've marked it on the pic which lights I mean. Cheers.

So you may not have them fitted as they were only on Exclusives with the Ambient Lighting. I had them with the leather, electric memory seats and welcome function on my X7.

As for the rear light - do you have the owner's manual?

Mine is Exclusive too with hydraulic. Also I do have the manual, it's in French though. Judging by your pic I did the first two things but the third one I am unsure how. The hole is too small to take out the little tray that holds the bulb. :D

I no longer have my X7 now, but if you look in the the diagram, there is a wingnut that needs to be undone to release the unit from the boot. I have marked it in red for you.

Once you have it out, you can get a better look at the clips if there are any - I can't remember now.

There is indeed a wingnut I failed to spot. I will try to undo it on the weekend and see if I can replace the bulb. Cheers :D I have one more bulb question. The interior rear passenger cabin light, I need to replace one bulb, but I can't see a way to pop out just the plastic cover, when I poke the screwdriver, the whole assembly is coming out from the roofing.

Is it suppose to be like that or am I doing it wrong?

Yes, these are annoyingly fiddly to do, so if you do manage to get it off, I suggest you replace all the bulbs to avoid repeating the process.

You are supposed to be able to use a small flat head screwdriver or a very small flat trim removal tool to prise the glass lens off to change it, but this can be near impossible without cracking the lens.

Get hold of a trim removal tool with a flat head and angled if possible. I suggest you remove the unit instead so you can work more easily as it will kill your neck trying to do it whilst in the ceiling.

The unit is held in by 2 metal spring clips. You just need to carefully push these in at the bulb edge and lever out the unit from the bulb side first, then you can disconnect the wiring plugs.

Once you have the unit out, you can more easily see where the lens is clipped into the unit.

Cheers mate! The bloody thing looked very fiddly to take out, so I wanted to ask first, cause I thought I'd break something. I got a bunch of bulbs so I'll replace all 3. Thanks once again for the detailed explanation. :D

Managed to pop off the plastic without breaking it or taking out the entire cabin light. Changed the bulbs, but the map ones on the side still don't glow. Just the middle one.

Blown fuse maybe?

I can't remember now, but if these are map reading lights, check with car running and headlights switched on to see if it makes a difference.

Fuse F7 is the one that controls these in the BSI, but this fuse also controls the glove box lighting - front and rear interior lamps - front and rear map reading light - courtesy mirrors, so those wouldn't work if it was the fuse.

If you are replacing with LEDs, then try and reverse the bulb as some need to be have the correct polarity.

I'm using regular bulbs. I will try it with the car running, I only tested it with the car off so far. Thanks!

P.S. Also successfully replaced the rear positions on the trunk. After you pointed out the wingnuts, it was easy, just unscrew the thing, pry open the light assembly a bit upwards, slide out the bulb holder, replace and put it back together. :D

You were indeed correct. Once the car is turned on, the map lights glow normally. But with it off, they don't. :D

How the bloody hell do you clip this thing back in place? Had to change the bulb, nothing broke I was careful but now I can't figure out how to make it stick. Keeps falling out.
