That's 2 slow moving boat videos in the last three counties, is this going to become a regular feature? :-D

Slightly more energetic, and a cringe-ey one show introduction, a few red Kites and a bit of paragliding

Last lap for Brecknockshire this evening.

Wind the clock back a few years and this chip shop provided an oasis of deliciousness brought on by a long drive from Northumberland and that needing fed feeling! Nice touch the old Cyclists Touring Club wheel on the wall. :-D

I think we should give the Brecon Mountain Railway a mention, for no other reason than it is routed through thr highest railway tunnel in Britain.

Caernarfonshire in the spotlight

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

New County is Caernarfonshire

Still in Wales, but plenty of scope.

So here is a low key start. When you say Caernafon to me I think Morrisons for some reason. Big Car park right in the heart of town, (former railway station) and overlooking the Menai Straits. It was raining, drove round by the castle and either dined in at Morrisons, or had a picnic in the car park.

So Caernafonshire's day in the sun starts with our evening in the rain.

This is a very simplified map of Wales which makes it easy to know where the counties are. You can see that our last county, Brecknockshire, is labelled as Brecon on this version:

That's the fascinating beauty of threads like this for me Mick. A little gem which hasn't been dug up for some time, and a song which pretty much everyone will know.

...and for the first time pretty much as the lyrics, rolled across the screen I thought...where on earth are the ferris wheel, paddle boats, the bay, eels in the big ferris wheel etc etc. Having been to Bangor didnt really think of it as a seaside resort with those sort of attractions, so wondered if it was a different "Bangor".

Out popped "Songfacts" and some revelations from the Band,
https://www.songfacts.com/facts/fiddler ... f%20Bangor.
It would be a fair assumption to make that the song was inspired by a day trip the song's writer, Whitstable Folk Club regular Debbie Cook, made to the North Welsh coastal town of Bangor. However, "Daytrip's" origins actually lay in a visit Cook made to Rhyl, a seaside resort 35 miles east of Bangor. Fiddle and concertina player Ian Telfer explained to Mojo magazine January 2010 that Bangor was chosen as it slipped off the tongue easier: "She was originally thinking of Rhyl, the resort, not Bangor," he said. "But clearly Rhyl has got no scan. The mayor of Bangor was a bit perplexed when it was a hit, but they were quite happy to accept the publicity."

It is interesting that the subject was Rhyl, I wondered if there might be some mix up with Bangor in N Ireland but it checked out on the site I looked at as being Welsh, which wasn't wrong of course!! :-D

For us Brummies Rhyl was the go to place for summer (wet :) ) holidays, last week in July first week in August, it always rained.
My parents rented a rail side bungalow one year, the tracks from Rhyl to Towyn and Abergele ran right past the front door and a few feet beyond was the sea wall which we boys walked along to Abergele several times during the fortnight.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Two things that spring to mind with Caernarfonshire - the World Heritage sites of the slate quarrying landscapes, and the Great Orme Tramway " Britain's only funicular, or cable-hauled, tramway that travels on public roads."
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

The little Spike at the top corner of the Counties of Wales, places Llandudno in Caernarfonshire, so a bit of first hand picturing from me.
