Has anyone driven the new C5X?

Post by Jay-Bruce »

Got to admit that I'm quietly smitten with the C5X and was wondering if anyone on here had driven one yet and what the experience was like?

No but there was a review by an American in China which said it was a poor drive. All cars are made in China and are stuck on a ship somewhere en route, hence no European reviews yet. Then again, I think US tastes and ours differ massively so I thought I’d wait for a more local review.

Oh, I stand corrected, the ship must have made it and there are some European reviews!

But, I too would like to hear what a Citroenista thinks of it

Watching those reviews has generated a thought in my mind!! Looking at the 10" or 12" screen with mobile phone touch and swipe technology makes me wonder!! Surely with our new legislation concerning touching mobile phones, what is the difference between a phone in its holder and a screen attached to the dash? In terms of driver distraction I would argue hardly any difference at all!!!  Does this mean you will only be able to change radio stations or the airflow etc. by stopping, switching off and then making your adjustments? :-D

I'll have a look at the reviews later on, but I must admit that the fact the these are "made in china" really puts me off of the C5X :-(

The systems on these incorporate voice commands Mick. So calling a phone contact needs no interaction physically and calls can be accepted and ended using the button on the steering wheel. It can also be setup to answer calls automatically if you want. That's why it's essential to setup the phone before you set off on your journey - either connect it up with the cable for CarPlay or Android or put it on the wireless charging pad, or in a cradle beforehand to stay within the new laws, as you can't have any interaction with the handheld now.

Also, other commands also work with voice, like navigation, changing the temperature for example. I can do that on my Aircross at present including changing the audio source, telling it what artist, album I want to play for example.

I agree with the wider point about interaction with the vehicle though - at what point does one say pressing any button or taking your eyes off the road to check your speed or look in the mirrors is a distraction?

Unfortunately they have now had to be a bit draconian in the law due to the advent of the social media scourge. With many people checking their Instagram, Facebook or Twitterati feeds and the like while driving. I don't have any of those on purpose. At least Apple has been sensible in determining which apps can be replicated via CarPlay onto the vehicle screen, so you won't get these available.

What people are going to have to do is get out of the habit of getting in the car and driving off and then faffing about plugging their phones in. Mine is out of site in a cradle in the back connected via Carplay - or if I don't need that, just bluetooth that connects automatically for the important things like calls. But now even sitting in standing traffic or at the lights and interacting with the phone is going to be illegal and there are a lot of 'cycle warriors' with helmet cameras that are actively looking for these drivers and uploading videos directly to the police for conviction.

This chap caught Guy Ritchie, Frank Lampard and Chris Eubank.... Here's a few:

Indeed they do Marc but, sadly, that won't stop many motorists using the screen with its swipe menus to do things while driving. By far the best thing to do is buy a 1965 Cortina or similar, leave the phone at home and just enjoy the driving!! :-D

Cycling Mikey is quite the man. Didn't like him much at first due to his voice and accent, he sounded aloof and condescending.
After a few clips it emerges that he isn't, but inspired by his father being killed by a drunk driver.

The Black-Belt-Barrister has a fair bit of information on using phones in cars, also the new traffic regulations on them and pedestrians & cycles.

... and a bit off topic I know, but glad to see Mr Eubank has stopped driving his 100 tonne juggernaut to the shops and back...

I get that Mick and there will always be those that do - but in terms of the wider point of operating controls in the car - at what point does it become a distraction - which could be the same for adjusting the stereo, changing the climate settings, adjusting the seat or anything else. There has to be a limit or you could say taking your hands off the wheel is an offence before long. Even Auto parking on mine requires me to select bay or parallel parking first of all from the screen and wait for it to detect a suitable space before it does the magic.

It's becoming a fine line, but I think sticking to the spirit of the law is what matters - essentially don't touch your phone while in the car.

Only a suggestion but I would say that as long as the controls can be operated by feel alone like indicators and gearstick etc., then it is acceptable but as soon as it is necessary to look at what you are doing it is a distraction. I for example, can switch between my pretuned radio buttons without taking my eyes off the road, or adjust the heater in the MX3 but not in the Subaru where I have to look at a display so it stays wherever I last set it until I stop. So perhaps the line should be drawn at things you need to look at as opposed to things you can do from habit or body memory? :)

That was exactly my gripe when I switched to the Aircross - most functions are touchscreen operated including all my heating and climate settings, and I was so used to feeling my way around the dash for the relevant button, - having said that in my C5 X7, there were zillions of buttons and a lot of these on the dash were smoothed against the fascia - so no tactile way of knowing what button you were pressing. Even the steering wheel which had a stack of controls being a fixed central boss which did have a few raised bumps here and there was difficult and you had to learn which bump was to increase and decrease the relevant control. Give me flick switches and levers any day!

I know exactly what you mean from the Subaru. No such issues in a Cortina!! :-D

By the way, there have been several written reviews of the C5X in the uk and they have been overwhelmingly positive :)
