Xantia HDi - Fire! DISTURBING VIDEO!

Post by Rhothgar »

Hi all,

I recently saw smoke coming from under the bonnet.

It's a little more serious than first thought.

Any advice would be appreciated.

For now, I am thinking of disconnecting these glow plugs?

Bugger....

Had you refilled the coolant by any chance? I did that to mine. You don't need the plugs they are just there to heat the water up a bit faster on cold start. There is a relay you can pull that will stop them energising.

Unfortunately the block will almost certainly leak now - mine did, and DickieG had the same trouble. He changed the heater on his, but it is a right git as the mounting is underneath. I think I'd be tempted to cut the hoses off and bypass it...

Brilliant @RichardW.

Yep. I did do a coolant change at some point but I also played around with relays for the cooling system fans and think I recall swapping out what was a relay with some corrosion in albeit still working (from vague memory) with one of the relays for the heaters. They both reside in BF00 fuse box under the bonnet.

How can I effectively bleed the system any better? Is there something peculiar about the HDi 110 engine?

Funnily enough I had my first dealings with Edwards and Son only yesterday when they were recommended to me by Martin of Pleiades when I called him to try and source some strut top mounts for the car. What a strange coincidence that is.

When you say the block will almost probably leak now, presumably you mean the heater block and not the engine block?

I also spoke to a breakers yesterday that has just got 2 HDi 110’s in!

If you speak with the breaker again, you might enquire as to whether they have hydractive suspension, and if so, whether the to number indicates that they have the improved valves, as these are getting hard to find.

When you say to number, presumably this is a typo and you mean RP?

If so, my car is not hydractive? Are you asking me to check if they have a particular valve available for your car? If so, give me further details please as I don’t quite understand whether you are asking or telling me something or whether valves is another typo? Sorry but I’m slightly lost.

Sorry about the typo, I did mean RP.

The topic explaining this is:viewtopic.php?&t=55429&p=494381#p494381 .

In brief, any hydractive Xantia after RPO 8155 has improved hydractive valves which noticeably improve the ride when going over large bumps such as speed humps, and allow the hydractive system to work reliably even when the engine is not running.

Due to the improved valves coming rather late in the production run, they are fairly rare and were most commonly fitted to HDI 110s (with hydractive), but are easily retrofitted to earlier Xantias, or XMs from about 1994.

Yes, I meant the heater block, not the engine block! The problem is usually caused when refilling the coolant and the plugs come on when there is air not water there. In both mine and DickieG's case it was after draining the coolant to replace the water pump. I can only think that the long level run along the back of the engine bay causes a problem with air getting trapped. The heater was also fitted to other cars (Xsaras and Picassos at least I think) so you might be able to find one in a breakers, but I was pretty sure after the cooking the hoses would be welded on. I never changed mine, it just continued to weep a bit for the rest of the time I had the car.

My understanding of hydractive suspension must be lacking.

The new strut mounts I have to replace the old ones only accept 3.5mm pipes and my pipe connectors have 8mm. hex connections. not 10mm nor 17mm.

My RP is 8232 or thereabouts so it should have this system but the pipes are surely not large enough diameter for hydractive?

Are these valves something you specifically need or are recommending I get for my car?

Time for some Forte Stop Leak for mine then…

Can the heater block be split in two to reveal an o-ring?

Rhothgar i think xantia_v6 was asking about the RPO number on the cars in the breakers and not recommending anything for your Xantia.

If the cars in the breakers are Hydractive and have a RPO later than 8155 then the electro valves and maybe associated pipe work could be very well worth obtaining even though it would not fit on your Xantia.

Yes, I was trying to prevent the scrappage of some useful and portable parts. It was nothing to do with your car.

I have learned one thing, I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that only Xantia HDIs with the winter pack had the auxiliary heater, and for the UK the winter pack was only fitted to Exclusive-spec cars that also had hydractive. Your car disproves that theory.

Sorry for going off topic.

This was a Citroen owned car originally so maybe they specced it up for potential test drives?
