Wigtownshire in the spotlight

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Wigtownshire

Now that is going to be challenging so time to step up to the curiosity plate and for those who don't know, find out where it is. Not many will first hand know that much about that particular corner of The UK.

If you are unsure where Wigtownshire is, head up the M6 - A74 over the border and then turn left and head for the sunset until you come across one of these:

and hopefully you've found it! :-D

Not very inspiring, but IIRC, Ronnie Barker did a joke in the 'And Finally' section of The Two Ronnies show which was something to do with wigs and Wigtownshire 8-[

Wigtownshire has one of those points of extremity so beloved of the signpost or other monumental marker pointing the distance to various other places. It has in the Mull of Galloway the most Southern Extremity of Scotland. For good measure it has a Stevenson Lighthouse on the cliff top at the very end in resplendent whitewash whose most dramatic view is from the air, but is one of those no-drone zones spoiling you tube being filled with the dramatic view.

Not meant to be difficult...here's how to find your way to the answer.

Its on one of the pictures from Day 190 of this travel blog which has some quality pictures of the Mull of Galloway.

Wigtownshire micro Quiz
The destinations marked on the fingerpost at the Mull of Galloway are
Edinburgh 113 Miles, London 293 miles Belfast 42 miles John O'Groats 285 miles Douglas (34 ish cant see the milage on the photo!) and another Country 2800 miles away.

What is the other Country and why is it on the fingerpost :?:

Correct Mick, I see it also has Lands End on it at 318 miles, and Douglas I.O.M is 37 miles from another pic which I have only just discovered on geograph. :-D

Have a cuppa and nibble of your choice at the Gallie Craig cafe, Mull of Galloway. Brilliant location and tremendous views from the outside terrace on a good day. I chose this rather dull image because I liked the humour in the title and description :-D

Schrodinger's Cafe

On observation the wave function collapsed and the cafe was found to be open and rather good. Meanwhile elsewhere in the multiverse........ Gallie Craig cafe, Mull of Galloway.

You're in a state where you might or might not get off the crossing where you've flooded the engine and the plugs might have dried enough?

Back in the 1970's HMS Ark Royal R09 Audacious Class Aircraft Carrier was the subject of a TV documentary Sailor.

Probably most remembered for the Sutherland Brothers composition Sailing sung by Rod Stewart.

So what has this got to do with Wigtownshire.

Well it became the Ark Royals Final resting place
She left Devonport on 22 September 1980 under tow to be scrapped at Cairnryan near Stranraer in Scotland, arriving on 28 September. When arriving at the breakers, her sister ship Eagle was in the final process of being broken up there. Breaking-up of Ark Royal took until 1983. During this period many former crew travelled to the breakers' jetty at the remote corner of Loch Ryan to pay their last respects; some were reduced to tears when seeing the ship being torn to pieces.
