eml light explanation

Unread post by dilligaf »

Good morning, I have a berlingo 625 en-prise blue HDI 2017 model. I recently had an EML light come on so took it into the dealer for a diagnostic.
The result was due to a faulty additive valve a new fuel tank is needed. Was told that tank would be approx 700 then the eolys would need filling about 100 and then labour, no mention of the adblue tank. total will be £2000. I am booked in to have the work done, my reason for the post is I would like to understand where this faulty additive valve is, is it actually in the tank that needs replacing ?
Thanks
ps. am a decorator not a mechanic, last time I looked under a bonnet it had a carburrettor in it :)

Welcome along!

It's difficult to know without having an exact breakdown of the work proposed.

usually if the Adblue tank is faulty you will get a message saying level low, starting prevented in XX miles, even though there is ad blue in the tank.

If only the EML "Engine fault, repair needed" or something on the screen is on, then it's probably not the adblue system. There is an Eolys tank and pump, but whether it is combined and the cost to replace it, I don't know. Seems a big step to go from £800 parts to a £2000 total bill - that's a lot of labour! I would ask for an exact breakdown of the fault found and the proposed work to rectify, and costs associated with it.

thanks for the welcome Richard.
It's quite a long story actually, when I went to pick the van up and was told it needed the work doing, I asked if I could have the codes from the diagnostic report, I was refused saying it wasn't citroen policy, and besides, it was a mechanicalfault so no code. I asked about the labour cost and was told the axle has to be dropped etc. then the eolys needed topping back up. I did contact Citroen stating the car had only done 38000 miles but it was out of the three year or 60000 miles warranty as its 5 years old. They are giving me 25% goodwill gesture off the bill, so cant complain at that. I also asked if Citroen should be using a part that would fail so quickly but never got an answer to that.
I have resigned myself to having the work done, but as you say I would have liked a more detiled breakdown of what was going to be done. I assume I will get this once the work has been carried out.
Thanks

You dont need to drop the axle on a Berlingo to replace the Eolys tank, on. 2 post ramp replacing the Eolys tank including filling with new additive & programming is no more than an hour’s work. Replacing the main diesel tank is a drop the rear axle job if I remember right. Is it the main diesel tank they want to replace?

Yes Wheeler this is the exact wording on the invoice I recieved for the diagnostic report.
Investigated cause of EML light on. Carried out fault checks, requires new fuel tank due to faulty additive valve.

That to me means the diesel tank ??
It's the feeling of " am I being conned " thats sitting wrongly with me.
I am due to go in on the 4th April for the works being done, I am hoping after chatting with the manager my fears will be put to rest.
I may also be worrying for no reason at all, if thats the case of a new fuel tank required I will live with it. No-one seems to be able to tell me that the additive valve is inside the diesel tank and cant be repaired, hence a new tank needed.

I'm seeing this as there is a fault in the Eolys tank.
The question is the is it external as the older non BlueHDi ones. Or is it built into the diesel tank?
We'll need VIN or atleast orga/DAM number
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

There is a valve in the main diesel tank where the Eolys feed in pipe connects.
