speedo removal on 98' xantia

Unread post by chimo »

Is it possible to remove the speedo without removing steering wheel? I need to replace some bulbs and i am a bit worried about removing the steering wheel as it has the airbag fitted. If i do have to remove steering wheel how do you do it and what precautions should i take.

you will need to remove the steering wheel i'm afraid , however i've done it on mine without removing it but it's a bit of a bodge as you have to bend parts of the trim up to get at the screws so you run the risk of damaging it , i wasn't too bothered about mine and managed to do the job without any damage.

Put steering wheel at 90 degrees left.
Disconnect battery and wait 15 minutes to discharge airbag back-up battery or capacitor.
Undo airbag from behind.
That's why the steering wheel has to be at 90º.
Undo airbag electric plug...slide sideways...easy...seeing is doing.
Loosen steering wheel retaining nut a few turns.
Grab steering wheel with both hands and gently twist left-to-right until loosened from splines.
No need to force...keep at it...it will come loose.
When loose, remove retaining nut and steering wheel.
At reassembly, no need to overtighten.
Turn retaining nut down until it hardens.
It won't escape and will be easier for next time.
Done it several times...no problems ever.

I agree with both posts. It can be removed but it needs some wicked persuasion! A good post by Clogzz but I would throw in that if your steering wheel height is adjustable, drop it down this gives better clearance, if you are not taking the wheel off. Could I remind you about the radio code if you are going to remove the battery connectors?
