1.6 HDi Injector sleeve - important ?

Post by tmead »

I've just pulled the injectors from a replacement engine, three came out with minor persuassion, and one was really tight and came out with the sleeve.

I had to abuse it and then use a mildly modified 2 litre HDi puller set that I had in the garage. The sleeve is well and truly stuck onto the injector with carbon buildup, and I ran out of time. At the moment I've popped the injector in with no sleeve, and the car is running well apart from a slightly odd noise that may be alternator or tensioner I hope.

How imporant are these sleeves ? I can see that they stop gunk from blowing all around inside down there in the head if the seals leak, but is there any other reason for them ?

Renew the lot sleeves and the copper washer seal there not over expensive the sleeves are important as coolant will leak from them within a matter of days of running it will make a total mess of your engine and your mpg will be poor possibly cook the head too.

The sleeve is a metal tube around 100mm long that surounds the injector as it passes down throiugh from the area you can touch to the injector seat ? There should be no diesel anywhere near that ? Appareently in the Peugeot head diagram its marked as non-removable, which is obviously not true...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16467223274 ... 8QAvD_BwE

The kit of parts for injector seal replacement has copper washers for the injector sealing, spacers and seals to seal the top of the injector sleeve and seal o-rings for the leakoff pipes. Fitting replacement seals around the top of the inejector sleeve is a pain, as the seal needs to be fitted outside the sleeve, whichy is fiddly.

I guess I can get the sleeve off like this C3 owner did, but then i'll have to op the injector out and try to press it into the head again. https://citroenc3owners.com/questions-a ... t2587.html

Oh - thanks husky. Your editted post to remove "diesel" and insert "coolant" makes me think a bit. I hadn't realised that the space around the injectots was full of coolant. It makes more sense why there are seals on the top now !

Sounds like I need to blowtorch the sleeve off the knackered injector and seal it back into the head.

It's oil - for all those who were scratching their heads at what i was wondering about ! Its obvious when i thought about it a bit more. The injectors pass down through the cam cover and through the void under it to get to the cylinder head itself - and that space is splashing around with oil !
I've cleaned the hole in the head right out, which is a bit of a pain, because it's 100mm or so down in there. I then glued the sleeve into place with loctite retainer rated for up to 180C. hopefully that will do the job.

For anyone wondering - the widely available 2 litre hdi injector puller kit can be adapted to work on the 1.6 by drillilng two holes on the 1.6 injector clamp bolt spacing. its not hard ! That gave enough pull force to pull the sleeve out of the head firmly attached ot the blowing injector.

Its all looking good.

Hi Tmead. Same problem with 2 injectors on my focus.

When I sit the sleeves back in the injector holes, they stand proud about 10mm.

How did you reseat yours and any issues since repositioning?

I cleaned the bores as best i could to remove dirt, oil and traces of previous adhesive, and then glued the replcaement sleeves in using high temperature loctite. they needed to be 'encouraged' down into the bores, as they are a tight fit. I used a reasonable thickness piece of aluminum to protect the top of the tube and they were driven home with a few hammer taps. Not too tight, they slipped in fine.

I think i used loctite 648 bearing retainer, as I had some around at work. Can't remmber the Pug recommended adhesive, but the 648 has a temp ersistance to 175 degrees. The recomendation is to us a 'high press rate' in the loctite data sheet, because as soon as air is removed from the adhesive it starts to cure - dont hang around !

Many thanks for the quick reply. I just hope a hammer and block of wood will get it in place.

Thanks again mate - great reassurance as I was dreading to have to replace cylinder head/engine.

Take care with wood - you dont want to drop splinters down inside or around the seal area !

I put new seals around the top of the tubes in the cam cover too. They were a bit of a sod to get in.

best of luck. Mine's done 20K since I put the tube in. I'm expecting lots more !
