C5 X7 steering rack green ring

Unread post by chunky2778 »

Hi all first post, have recently purchased an 09 1600 HDi vtr+ and has a quick look underneath it yesterday.

There's a massive oil leak from the engine which I think might be the rocker cover gasket but that's a job for another day, however there were a few drops of PAS fluid around the subframe which looked like they were from the pipe seals.

However having read this forum I've become aware of the rusty shaft/seal problem and have stripped out the interior grommets etc to inspect the shaft.

The leak is from the pipe seals, but while I've got the grommets out etc are these green rings worth fitting as a preventative measure or do they only go into new racks?

Are they available from Citroen separately or should I just grease up the shaft and leave well alone?

Also what is the correct fluid for the rack with normal suspension springs please, the fluid in there now is red. The PAS reservoir is a black box but I can't see any max or min marks on it?

It's the same LDS fluid for the PAS as models with hydractive suspension.

It depends which seals you are referring to, but Citroen only supply full racks. There's also issues getting the power steering pipes for some models, so depends on the exact engine you have.

The leak may come from the pinion shaft seal as the shaft rusts and deforms the seals, or it may come from the actual PS pipes where they enter the rack.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Dont waste your time, the plastic rings will do nothing to stop or even slow down the inevitable. Citroen dont sell the pipe seals separate either, you have to buy a full pipe, if you can even get them that is. Some of the steering pipes on my C5 were no longer available before the car was even 10 years old. This is the main reason i got rid of my C5, apart from steering pipe & rack issues it was a great car
