This is so that when the controller issues instructions to pilots concerning approaching a runway the pilot cannot be in doubt as to which end he must approach. This applies whether landing or taxiing out for take off. Simple but effective designation rather than eg Runway 1 and Runway 2 which would then require a further instuction as to which direction to use it. Most runways are used in both directions according to prevailing winds and so the compass designation ensures no misunderstanding. :-D
Thanks Mick interesting stuff, I don't think the photograph taker on Geograph had that sort of detailed knowledge :-D

The runway's are at Dornoch Airfield and the other one of his pics shows what he describes as "Runway 28" marked in a similar fashion to the 10.

Just woken up and realised I made a fundamental cock up in that post on the runway numbers!!!! #-o
The compass direction always loses it's 3rd digit so 10 is in fact 100° and the opposite end will be 100 + 180 = 280° so dropping third digit becomes runway 28. Thus the two pictures are of either end of the same strip. Sorry about that but I was still half asleep!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

..and the penny drops with me that there is only one runway too! Still I'm off up in the google satellite just out of curiosity!

I was looking round an auction room in Axminster many years ago and there was a large mirror leaning against the wall, on it was a label that read' Sutherland Arms Hotel Golspie' which had apparently been bought by someone from down here. They also owned the fish and chip shop which I think was in Brora, anyway we have been in there. All changed again now.

Nicely done Mick and all correct, so have a peep inside Mick's spoiler if you like. Don't think we have had any launches from the space hub yet. :-D

Perhaps the jewel in Sutherland's Stately Home crown, and especially so the gardens is this...

Absolute wealth of information and pictures on the Sussex Flag here. Quite a gruesome tale of King Edmund's martyrdom by the arrows of the invading Vikings. Look out for the flag next time you are in Suffolk. The pictures certainly give the impression that it is quite proudly displayed, on produce, village signs, at events, organisations etc and most notably on Suffolk Day June 21st.

Also on Greene King beer :-D
