C5 III front suspension knock and tyre gobbling

Unread post by saxy »

Hi all, new here, and have a 2010 C5 2.0 HDI saloon with NON HYDRO i.e. steel spring suspension - love it, but need help:
I have a recurring front suspension knock and the car is eating drivers' side front tyres, with wear on the inside edge killing a tyre every 2-3000 miles.
Obviously a bush gone somewhere, but what do I do? Specifically:
1. which bush should I look at, or should I just go about replacing everything to be sure?
2. I'm fairly handy and have a load of normal tools, trolley jack and axle stands - could I attempt a complete bush replacement myself, and if so how long will I need/what pitfalls to expect/any specialist tools I need to get?
3. Are there complete bush kits available or do I need to buy each one individually?
4. Should I just hand it over to my local garage (small village MOT centre) and tell them to fix it?
5. If so, how much am I going to have to remortgage the house for, roughly?
Sorry to sound like a complete moron, but just want this sorted as I love my C5 and want her to go on a rubber-free diet - any advice and help from you guys (including suspension diagrams, parts lists, etc etc etc) would be hugely appreciated.
Theres probably reams of stuff on here but my search revealed 1486 results and I didn't fancy trawling through all of those...
Thanks all for any help!
Justin

Most likley you have a trackrod end loose. Have you checked for that?
There are a few bushes in this front end otherwise.

No 12 and 14 are most prone to wear. The bush at "32" in the upright also can fail.
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

The ones on mine that were completely shot were the bushing where bolt 20 goes through the bottom of the upright although strangely not numbered here? To the left of the number 32.

These need to be pressed out and the new ones pressed in very straight. But it can be done. There's a good YouTube video by 'madforfrenchcars' where he does this on a Peugeot 407 that has the same assembly.

If it's the outer track rod ends these are easy to disconnect although the rod end nut can be super resistant to moving. Only special tool would be a balljoint separator. Also wire brush the adjuster part of the track rod and take a photo of the number of threads on each side so as to get the new track rod ends in the right place. Both sides should have the same number of threads showing. I'm sure the number on mine was around 8 full threads a side as a guide. Then if your steering wheel is a little off driving straight, you can adjust a quarter turn one side or the other. You'd still have to have the tracking checked though by a garage.

Ha sorry, didn't spot that you'd mentioned bush 32 there.

I suggest raise your front driver side and check all the bushes on suspension and steering. Likewise the same on the nearside.
I will probably be at least one bush badly worn.
Check first to identify the offending part/s
Good luck
