Xantia ABS ring compatibility

Unread post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, I have a new CV joint to go on the Xantia. It's a new pattern part and everything looks identical except the ABS ring. Comparing to the old CV joint you can see the ABS teeth are like double the size:

I bought the CV joint nearly 3 months ago so I can't send it back - I only spotted the difference yesterday.... It might be specced from a later Xantia because mine is one of the earliest

Am I right in thinking fitting this CV joint will cause the ABS to fault? I think it will because the signal will always be wrong from that wheel.

Any thoughts? I wonder if I could change the ring itself?

That will not play nicely with your abs. Can the abs ring be cut off and replaced by one with correct teeth?

I think that your replacement part may be for a Peugeot.

Hmm Peugeot huh? Darn these ebay suppliers.

I think it can be removed and possibly a new one sourced. I might be able to heat the replacement to fit it. Could probably heat this new one because the cv joint has no grease in it yet.

It was quite a cheap part at £16. I really onky need to replace the cv boot on the car so might just use the new boot from the kit.

Annoyingly the abs fault i already have - abs light comes on after a mile - is suspected as begin caused by a corroded tooth r ing on onef of the hubs...

Both the diameter and the size of the teeth changed during the lifespan of the Xantia.
I can't give you changeover dates, but I suffered a similar problem when buying replacement rings once before.

They're pretty easy to change. I would take a sharp cold chisel to the one on the existing part.
I've bought replacements from eBay. The first time I swapped one, I warmed it up on a gas ring (while my lady wife was out, obviously).

But it wasn't really necessary. The second time I did the job, I just tapped the replacement into place with a brass drift.

On closer inspection the original CV joint doesn't have a removable ring. It's part of the machining of the CV joint. The new item is removable. Does anyone know what the size and number of teeth for a 1993 Xantia are? Some available rings are coming up as 48 teeth and 90mm diameter. I won't be back at the workshop until friday PM earliest so I can't check. Looks like the ring in your photo is a 48t. What model Xantia is it from? Mine has the Bendix ABS I believe

Alas, I've only had S2 Xantias, so I can't help with that one. I'm sure someone else will be along soon who can though

Cheers, I can wait and measure it later in the week. I have this other problem with the abs lamp coming on after a mile anyway and I'm tracing the cause of that. One possible cause is a damaged or really corroded tooth ring so it's possible that I'll definitely need to source one of these anyway.

I had a loose reluctor ring on the front of my Xantia that caused the ABS light to come on after a mile or so. Once both front reluctor rings were replaced the ABS system had no further issues. Both my Xantias were S2.

Hi Graeme,

There are different drive shafts shown on Parts, for Xan 1.9TD Mk.1, depending on RP number:
?6443
6444?6748
6749?
but ALL have 48 tooth ABS rings.
