Early X7 stereo hiccup

Unread post by aerodynamica »

About an hour into a drive with the aux mode on the satnav display went dark, everything silent and the red light above the SOS button was flashing
This light flashed red
This light flashed red
After about 5 seconds it seemed to restart and was apparently OK. But is this a sign of imminent failure? Any idea what I'm looking at, overheating or something?

I realise this first version of the x7 telematics isn't great but it does serve and I'm keen to keep it alive or be prepared for what to fix or replace

Hmm I just noticed Peter's query on this thread: https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... hp?t=70373
it seems similar? Although mine was only flashing for 10-20 seconds and then kind of rebooted without anything being done.

might get the fault code reader on't to see if there's anything.

Hi Graeme

Just wondering and sticking my head on the block with no tech experience :)
from what i have read on various threads it maybe just that the head unit itself has switched off due to over heating issues.
My thought process is you have it on Aux mode and as much as i like the area you live in i guess the heater was on so it maybe that the fact it restarted/rebooted maybe just a case of it doing what it needs to do to keep working.

It's not THAT cold here Colin :-D it's 8 degrees please! But sure, the climate was set to '22' as opposed to the recommended 21.5 that the driver's manual says will provide the best comfort.. I think I am just feeling the chills this year.. being over 40 brings a new sensation :rofl2: I also had the heated seat on but not sure that could make a difference. Who knows, it will probably chuck in the towel in some bizarre way that also causes something unrelated to break like the horn or something...

I wonder if Aux mode causes it to run warmer? I don't know, it did have a hiccup and I thought it had actually suddenly died but then suddenly it reanimated and continued to play.. In any event, in the other thread there's talk of replacing some item that could cause the full unit to go off and the cost of the thing is unreal (like everything on the C5) so it would be a s/h replacement if it's that.

I'd have upgraded the hifi and satnav to the post 2010 type with bluetooth but apparently that's no mean feat so sod that..

It could be the hard drive is dying. Better make a backup - replace with a flash/ssd soon.

You've seen my recent post on this Graeme, it may just be that the RT4 unit is has rebooted and the flashing is just a self-check. As long as it isn't solid, you should be ok. The unit can restart or shut down for a while if it overheats and this can include warnings where the volume is decreased.

As OSX has mentioned, if the unit starts rebooting more frequently, it may be a sign that the hard disk is badly fragmented or starting to fail. Keep an eye on it and try to determine the exact functions being used when it does this. I.e. when listening to music from the Jukebox, or AUX and or having navigation active at the same time etc.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

I'm going to ask a daft question now: what's actually on the hard drive? I've never 'saved' anything and so far only use my phone connected via the aux connections.

I don't recall seeing anything about it in the driver manual but might have missed it

Where is the HDD? How do I back it up? And is there any way to update the maps in the sat nav?

You can start here http://rt4.wikidot.com/hard-disk but there are plenty of threads with instructions on how to upgrade/replace the drive

Thanks, that wiki mentions the backup of the drive but only states it is possible - not how to do it. I'll have a search on the other threads

Seems to be done with a spliced USB to a connection on the rear of the unit? I could only find basic info on hdd back up and visa a peugeot site.

Seems the flash card, adapter, update cdrom is needed before even beginning this. Also the hdd is to be removed from the head unit before it can be copied. A 32g flash card replaced the hdd.
