New Highway Code Changes
You may find this interesting, I can see some real problems resulting from some of the rules eg someone turning left in front of you and then stopping dead halfway round because there is a more vulnerable user wishing to cross!! I can't wait to see how many cyclists get done for jumping red lights!!

Re: New Highway Code Changes
It sounds a bit similar to what I've come across in Germany. You can be in a car at a 4 way traffic light controlled junction waiting to turn right*, the light goes green, you move a few yards forward then can't go anywhere as pedestrians are crossing the road you're turning into. Then the light turns red again.
* - don't forget they drive on the wrong side over there.

Re: New Highway Code Changes
France has a few dangerous rules.
Some villages have ''priority a Droite'' Traffic joining a main road from a side road have right of way.
I drive a truck with abnormal loads', there is a rule that if my escort vehicle, Yellow van with flashing lights, Goes through a green light and it turns red before I get there, I have right of way and don't need to stop !
Just some accidents waiting to happen.

In parts of the USA, California e.g. at cross road no one has right of way you must stop from whichever direction you come, it results in a lot of "You first" "No you first" situations.
They also have one man refuse trucks so the bins have to put out, the driver never gets out of his cab, pulls up alongside and they're picked up mechanically, on collection day no parking is allowed and any vehicle left in the way of the dust cart gets towed to the pound.

That's correct.GiveMeABreak wrote: ↑18 Jan 2022, 10:46That's 'Priority from the Right' unless my French has taken a dive....
In the 50s and earlier you could be driving along a major Route Nationale and then a farmer's 2CV would come barrelling off a lane and go right in front of you and you had to give way as he had priority. Thankfully, most roads have priority on the major road now but it is not uncommon for small (and not so small) villages to deliberately still have ''Priorité a Droite'' in their centre.

Re: New Highway Code Changes
When we used to visit Holland some years ago traffic from the right had priority and people used to deliberately drive out of a side road and cause a crash so they could have a new car.

Re: New Highway Code Changes
You probably come across a few horses, cyclists and walkers in the rural roads round Dorset Peter. I know there are plenty round here, particularly so on a Sunday.
Safe passing distances for overtaking pedestrians cyclists and horse riders all more vulnerable than me or you in our speedy tin boxes, are well catered for by the new rules. Horses, often ridden on the roads by surprisingly young youngsters, always pose a particular hazard which I am totally on the side of over-caution. I myself have been on a many many hands high carthorse called Caesar, on a little trek from a local riding school, when on a country road nearing the return to the stables Caesar got a bit of momentum going down a hill and just took off for home. Yes I'm sure my naive horsemanship was to blame, but it appeared Caesar didn't have any brakes fitted.
Luckily my trekking companion from the stables rode alongside and herded Caesar into the side of the road and he came back to his normal plod
Yes that incident wasn't caused by a motorist passing too close, but I definitely felt a very vulnerable road user at that point. National speed limit applies on that road 60mph, and some do more than that. In the country the most telling rule is you should be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear, and expect a tractor/horse/cyclist/pedestrian/fallen tree around every bend.
I thought I had better see what it says as it comes in this Saturday. One thing mentioned with respect to horses I picked up from this article...
Regards Neilhttps://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/compan ... ghway-code
Rule 213 has also been changed to confirm that on narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see and be seen.

We have a bridal path comes past the house Neil, don't very often see horses - until you are trying to get in or out . We used to meet lots of animals on the road but since the number of milking herds has diminished from 6 or 7 when we first came to zero now we don't meet many, the occasional flock of sheep but they are decreasing as well. At least our traffic jams are quiet.
