After trying the service reset (press button under the light then engine start without clutch, wait for the countdown and it says reinitialised) then I changed my dead key fob battery which I read may also be a cause, still the service light stays on.. no other warning lights and the car runs great..
Any tips for other causes I can investigate a service light that refuses to be reset?

Re: Service light will not reset, why?
Are you sure the service light is not on for another reason? You'll know if the maintenance reset has worked or not when switching on the ignition and watching the display - it usually tells you the mileage remaining until the next service. If it has not changed then it hasn't been completed properly - it it has reset, then the service light is to do with another issue.

Thanks, the numbers reset but the light stays.... Which is what confuses me.

I take it this the newer style Picasso? If the service light comes on temporarily, it should also have a message flash up with it. If the service light is on permanently, then it's classed as a major fault for which there is no specific message or warning and it is recommended to contact the dealer. It will need a proper diagnostic to determine what's wrong with it.

Re: Service light will not reset, why?
With a bit of logical deduction it turned out to be one of the headlight bulbs was dead, replaced both today and the service light is gone. I also put an OBD2 reader on it last night, the log was empty, so just the service light on was the indication the lights had an issue. Hopefully this helps someone in future.
