Tyre monitors advice

Post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, I get the warning that the front left tyre monitor is not working. See pic showing others are functional.
20220109_113651.jpg
I've looked on the forum and understand that a battery in the senders goes and also there are two types of monitor available.

I have to get new tyres anyway and think this is the time to source a new set of monitors. Is that the best idea or sound I just get the one replaced with the tyres.

Additionally the rear 2 both seem to be leaking air at the valve. I tried nipping one up but this only seemed to worsen the leak....

Any advice greatly received!

For the ones that are leaking If your valve are the metal stem type you can get repair kits that come with new nut, seals, valve core & cap. Only around £6 each from dealers. You just need to make sure before you refit the new ones that you clean up the bit the valve sits in, the paint usually bubble up on alloy wheels causing then not to seal right.
If it was me i'd only replace the valves that were faulty, dont see the need to replace them all as they are easy enough to replace individually.

Graeme,

I deactivated the TPMS and do it the old fashioned way. Since it is NOT part of the MOT for cars prior to 2012.

Are they easy to replace? I've no experience of them. Where is the sensor located? I thought it was inside awkwardly. Is it the cylindrical part on the outside?

The sensor is on the base of the valve, just held on by a single nut. You have to remove the tyre (or at least break the bead on one side) to get to it.

It's much easier to just have them repair them for the sake of £6 a tyre. It is recommended these are changed every few tyre changes - but most don't bother until they get a fault. I went through about 6 sets of tyres before I had the valve repair kits done.

Regardless of MOT, it's a very useful safety feature that has saved my bacon a few times when I had the warnings for low pressure / puncture, as with a hydractive C5 like this - you can't always tell!

Yea I was thinking of repairing anyway. Are tyre places known to be able to replace them and/or the valve seals?

Hard to say - I had mine done at the dealer while it was having something else done (which was quite often :rofl2:) as I didn't want any 10 year olds hacking away at my alloys - but you may find some decent places will do them for you so you just have to buy the kits from Citroen.

The batteries in the transmitters are designed to last about 10 years - so not bad. I've known them last longer, but they are not officially user serviceable, though I'm sure there will be some who have obliterated the sensors to replace the battery. This also means they'll need resealing again if going this route.

Hm I think the chap I spoke to before Christmas at the parts dept of the citroen dealer was about 10.... not heard back from them either. 2x O rings for a xantia.. can't be that hard? I I'll call the dealer again and see about these TPS things. I'd be best to get all 4 surely as it's imaging the other 3 will soon follow in death given the car is now 13..

Not sure if you are aware but a set of 4 will be between £516 - £552 depending on what ones are fitted if you buy from Citroen. Thats just for the parts with no fitting.

I just had standard valves fitted on the 407 and deleted it in Diag, nice feature, but not worth the money on an old car £552 is only 100 squid less than I paid for the car

Yes, now I see why people are deactivating it.
