306 Clutch Pedal

Post by John306 »

The clutch is really heavy, I mean you have to push really hard, it's like an exercise machine.
Is there a bit that wears out - a spring or something?
I don't have any problems with the actual gear change.
Anyone have the same problem, or even better an answer?
1993 1.9 diesel by the way.

My 306 had exactly the same problem.
I replaced the clutch cable and that didn't solve it.
I was then told that it was common on the 306 for the pressure plate to wear out.
Had the cluch replaced and it is now as light as a feather!

How much does a new clutch cost?

Its a common problem apparently. For my 2.0 Xsi Peugeot quoted £428 + vat and my local Peugeot specialist £175 all in. I've chosen to ignore it.

I paid £200 on my 306 DTurbo and that was with a genuine pug cluch kit supplied and fitted and a 2 year warranty.

I'd change the clutch cable first and see if it makes a difference. The RHD 306s all seem to suffer from problems with the clutch cable getting stiff due to it's routing. If you've got A/C installed it's a bit of a knuckle grazer, probably best to get a fixed price off a garage to do it. It's not helped by the fact that the Pug garages I dealt with couldn't even work out the correct replacement part number for the cable.

My 306 always had a heavy clutch even after it was replaced (under warranty too). Didn't change the cable though.
My mechanic said that most RHD PSA motors have heavy clutches but my girlie's AX is fine and I've never seen the ZX owners complaining.
I solved it by getting rid of the car. After doing over 40k in it though!
