. and put 3 drops of (some of) Castrol's finest in there. I doubt whether I'd be able to hear the difference if I'd used some rinky-dinky silicon based (snake) oil on the bearing, and besides - I had some Castrol left over from the hairdryer's gearbox

Of interest to maybe.... ooooh, two people

The results of cleaning the first 80-90 12"/LP records in my collection........ and I normally try and handle the vinyl with care
It's a wet bath cleaner, and the brushes are in the bath and sweep the vinyl. 90 bits of vinyl has given me the sum total of the muck visible on the brushes and that which can be seen at either end of the filter paper I wonder if anyone sells a clean room for storing vinyl in ? Maybe one for the hi-fi bores to wax lyrical about..... "Oh no, you should always store vinyl at 18° and 62% relative humidity otherwise it loses some of its tonal floor and resonant ceiling etc, etc"

I think I've only got that on CD, and I find it so difficult to stop the stylus running off the side of the CD

A lot of mine lost their shape when I left them in the conservatory, finished up like plastic fruit bowls.
I don't have a turntable now, sold all the hi-fi stuff off but there are a few LPs on my shelf still, not the popular ones.

Hank William's Life Story,
Nat King Cole Trio (Too marvellous for words),
Fiddler on the Roof double album.
There's also a 45 Alan Lindgen instrumental of 'You don't bring me flowers.'
and a Spanish 45 La Camboria y su Troupe Gitana I bought in Tenerife many years ago.
Heaven knows what condition they're in

Usually have a daily paddle around Geograph, Image of the Day, Image Randomiser, jump to random square.

Liked the construction of this image from North Lincolnshire, excellent natural layering of shapes colours textures and lines.

Lidice Monument

Saw some photo's of this, something I had known but pushed to the back of my memory.
Marie Uchytilová-Ku?ová spent decades creating these statues of children, made as realistic as possible to portray the actual children that were removed from their village by the Nazis and executed in retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich.

The world first learned about Lidice via a brutally detached Nazi radio announcement broadcast the day after the attack: “All male inhabitants have been shot. The women have been transferred to a concentration camp. The children have been taken to educational centres. All houses of Lidice have been levelled to the ground, and the name of this community has been obliterated.”

Smithsonian.

Not a happy subject, sorry, but a very moving one and one among many that should never be forgotten.

The international response showed that Lidice would not be forgotten:

"In September 1942, coal miners in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, in Great Britain led by Barnett Stross, a doctor, who in 1945 became a local MP, founded the organisation Lidice Shall Live to raise funds for the rebuilding of the village after the war.

Soon after the razing of the village, towns in various countries were renamed, San Jerónimo Lídice in Mexico City, Barrio Lídice and its hospital in Caracas, Venezuela, Lídice de Capira in Panama and towns in Brazil so that the name would live on in spite of Hitler's intentions. A neighbourhood in Crest Hill, Illinois, U.S., was renamed from Stern Park to Lidice. There is a shrine at Lidice park on Prairie Avenue in Crest Hill; the original shrine was at the end of Kelly Avenue at Elsie Street. A square in the English city of Coventry, devastated by Luftwaffe bombing, is named after Lidice. An alley in a very crowded area of downtown Santiago, Chile, is named after Lidice and one of the buildings has a small plaque that explains its tragic story. Bob and I had a drive past them on our way down to Goodwood a couple of years ago. The forecourt was full of classic sports cars as well as the Mitsuokas, they had a lovely XK120 but I didn't have £35000 to spare!!

Effingham turns out to be Barnes Wallis Country, and T W White's garage established in 1964 as the pic from the old days on the garages gallery shows was an iconic looking establishment.
