Re: Picture(s) of the day....
OK so I discovered that I actually made the first post on POTD this year, viewtopic.php?p=705955#p705955 , which appears on my page 121 so I have run the random tool and come up with:
which takes me to my page 36 on which I made this totally NE based selection (+ Chris' view of Torre del Mar of course!

I like the linked pics Mick
Would that pic have been taken without our random delve into the 2021 treasure trove of POTD we will never know, but I've a feeling it sowed a seed
Now an unashamed advert for Threads that are very easy to participate in.

That however does not answer the reason for the pink ping pong balls in both cars?

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Threads which are very easy to contribute to
Number 2 Nice places to stop off at
The link above goes to one of the best dolphin spotting locations in the United Kingdom, Chanonry Point on the Black Isle. If you are still a dolphin spotting virgin that's the place for a virtually guaranteed view, and the best close up view from the shore, but they are quite common all around the coast and there are plenty reported from Northumberland, and many other places.
Beechgrove Garden this morning were doing an episode featuring Ardersier and some community veg growing schemes, just across the Moray firth from Chanonry. I thought the landscape looked familiar.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
After this mess will end, I will get a plane to UK, rent a car and check and the beautiful sites for about 2 weeks
And yes, I want to see dolphins in the wild.

If you are planning a trip round the UK Alin you might find the story of our round England trip in September 2020 interesting. It is all documented on the FCF in the following thread:10mbc wrote: 02 Jan 2022, 16:10 After this mess will end, I will get a plane to UK, rent a car and check and the beautiful sites for about 2 weeksAnd yes, I want to see dolphins in the wild.

Slight Romania connection with the Ardersier community veg growing schemes, just across the Moray firth from Chanonry. The lady featured was Mari Reid, who originally came to Scotland from Romania.

Today's shutter clicks. Surely gives inspiration to others and affirmation that standard of photography is no barrier to posting on Picture of the Day. Indeed they are the only "originals" posted today so they are both the best and the worst!
Even the most knowledgeable birder would have difficulty in identifying the subject of all three pictures. It is an unusual sight, although in general pheasants can be all sorts of different colour combinations especially when bred specifically to release for "sport", a pure white one is a rarity. Unsure if it was a full albino only seen one of them before.

Today I managed to do an oil change on my turntable. It wasn't very exciting so I didn't take any photos as it only takes 3 drops of oil

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
What turntable is it? I have been using mine for over fifty years and no oil has been applied, only a new belt and cartridge.
I did buy one for a friend of a friend. It had no box so was cheap, a display model.
Put it on the rear seat of the firms 245 and drove from Borås to Västerås.
When we arrived, some of the oil had spilled out onto the seat, which we never managed to clean off.
Also the slight spillage spoiled the speed setting and it was years before he managed to get some more oil and get the speed right.
That was a J A Michell Transcriptor, as featured in A Clockwork Orange.
The platter/bearing is hydraulic (floats on oil) as is the tone arm bearing.
A strange coincidence was that attached to the local Vickers tank factory was another factory that just had 'Michell' on it. They made the gunsights for the tanks. The boss wanted a nice turntable so had the transcriptor made for him, then sold some to his mates and the audio business grew from that.
It was years before I dicovered that the gunsight factory was where the transcriptor was conceived.

It's a 25-and-some-odd year old Planar 3 that replaced an old Dual. It's only recently been extricated and dusted off due to finally getting somewhere to put it and finally getting 'round to giving the vinyl collection a serious cleaning - it's astonishing how much filth is coming off them
When I turned it on, I'd immediately noticed it was very slow to pick up speed but this turned put to be the not uncommon problem of the drive pulley coming loose on the motor shaft - a dab of superglue sorted that. Whilst doing some general housekeeping on it I whipped off the sub-platter, removed the spindle bearing, cleaned out the filthy oil, and put 3 drops of (some of) Castrol's finest in there. I doubt whether I'd be able to hear the difference if I'd used some rinky-dinky silicon based (snake) oil on the bearing, and besides - I had some Castrol left over from the hairdryer's gearbox
Can't remember what the first bit of vinyl to be played was this time 'round - might have been Depeche Mode, might have been One Dove, might have been Blue Nile as they all got an airing along with lots more..... Black, Phil Collins(!), Kate Bush etc, etc. The next mission is to replace the cartridge and see where that gets meNewcastleFalcon wrote: 03 Jan 2022, 09:47 So what track from your collection was given the honour of the first play, post turntable oil change![]()

I was watching some Youtubes about Rega and Ron Gandy - he seems to take a refreshing view about making turntables. It's not really a numbers game to him - it's what it sounds like that counts.
