407 drop links - shock absorber dropped

Post by 407 »

So, thought todays would be a good day to have a look at the drop links to see if they were serviceable, given some knocking noises .

Undid all the bolts as per some youtube videos and went to pull the main bolt out, which also secures the bottom of the shock absorber .

All was fine until I could not pull / hammer the bolt out anymore so decided to screw it out with some vice grips.

Unlike in the youtube videos, when I finally managed to get the bolt out, the shock absorber clunked and dropped down to the CV joint axle, so the holes now do not align.

Given its location, its nigh impossible to try and wedge / lift / jack the the bottom of the shock absorber to realign the holes (eg its gassed up and seems fine).

Dismantling the struct does not also seem to be a option.

Any ideas / hints ?

Anymore photos a Little further back as to get the whole picture of your working area, if you can .
I might then try work out something for you.

Sorted out with some new peugeot tools I never knew I had in the garage

The shock has a steel lip that you can wedge a crow bar under and gentle and carefully lower the car until the shock comes up in line with the drop link holes

I also put a wooden wedge between the cv joint axle and the shock to try and force it the right way, plus a second jack under the ball joint to help move things around.

A bit of screw driver and hammer work helped forced the holes to line up.

Next time I'll be sure to put a same size bolt (or old drop link bolt) into the other side of the drop link as I pull the old one out to stop it dropping again (unlike the youtube videos) .

ps - there is not a lot of work area

I had this problem with min C5 when I changed the front springs but if you are only changing the drop link you can pull it out half way and put something of a similar diameter in the other end to stop the bottom link moving out, when refitting do the reverse so there is always something holding the bottom wishbone in position.

As I had to take mine right out I managed to put it together again using a scissor jack against the outside of the hub then wrapped a length of lashing wire round the chassis and jack clamping the ends with a 'D' bolt clamp and wound the jack out to push the hub back, I put a couple of bits of 2x2" timber between the jack and the hub to allow the drive shaft to come through.
