CITROEN ZX 16V VS VW GOLF GTI 2.0 16V?

Post by faigolfgti »

How good is the Citroen zx 16v compaired to the VW golf mk2 2.0 16v?In terms of fun driving? Performance? Handling? Reliability? Why I am asking this because I am driving a VW Golf Gti at the moment, and plan to change to a ZX 16v, hope I will make the right move. All comments are welcome.Thank You.

zx wont be quite as fast off the line as its heavier but overall its probably about the same speed. If you can get a later mk2 version with the 167bhp engine it will be faster still. Handling wise the zx 16v is great and easily on a par with the mk2 golf. Lot of fun as they go around corners like they are on rails and do not lean or anything, good brakes etc. Other than general wear and tear they are ok but can have problems with these bits on the air intake, then its just normal things like clutch and so on but same as with any other car. Suspension bushes may been replacing if its done quite a few miles to it being so stiff and the type of car it is. The electric windows are probably the worst thing on them for breaking but not too expensive to fix.
I dont know how many golfs and zx's you have out there but over here the zx 16v is very rare so good in that people are curious about it whereas golfs are quite common

My meagre knowledge that may be incorrect (!) is that the 155BHP engine, is the 2.0i engine as used in the late 405Mi16, and the 306 S16 - however is it commonly reputed to only put out about 150BHP, and not be 'all that hot' allegedly.
The 167BHP engine is the same engine as sits in the 306 Gti-6, and is meant to be pretty good by all accounts.
In terms of year - not totally sure, but in the UK I have seen the 167BHP variant sold on a 1996 car - but I'm sure if I'm way off someone will correct me.
Cheers

yep 1996 only i think and in very small numbers. In france they also came with the xsara vts wheels, unsure on the few sold in uk.
the 150/155 engine has the massive plastic inlet manifold which has dual chambers running inside it. The 167 has a manifold like the old 1.9 16v engine, silver, simple thing, far better!
