Sorted USB stick

Post by Chris Burmajster »

Hello,

When you plug a new USB stick into a DS 7, does the car sort the music on it? I've put new folders into mine and when I plug it in it dosen't recognise them. Why? How do you do it?

The system will play the files as they are on the USB.

But it is important that you have formatted the USB correctly (FAT32) and don’t use a MAC to format it. Then add your MP3 files into simple folders. This is an example that works fine:

Fleetwood Mac (Top Folder)
Rumours (Second Folder)
The Chain (Song)

So basically Artist>Album>Track

Make sure the files are in a format the Head Unit can play and at a suitable bit rate. The specifics will be in your DS7 Owner’s Handbook.

If you take the USB stick out, add some more files and then plug it back in the system will ignore the new ones as it has already scanned the stick and saved the (previous) file structure to save time when playing music.

All you have to do is plug another USB stick in to overwrite the previous stored structure and then your first USB stick which will then be rescanned.

There is an upper limit on the number of files that can be recognised on a stick but I'm assuming you haven't reached this.

Hello,
I have tried the suggestion that Paul-R suggested, but it doesn't work. I disconnected the USB stick, added some more files, then I connected another USB stick with 2 files on it and the system scanned it. Then I re-connected my original USB stick but the car didn't recognise that I have added numerous files. What should I do, please?

What is the upper limit for the number of files that can be memorised on a stick?

I would reformat the USB stick on a PC, using the FAT32 option (as this is all the audio system can recognise). Then I would copy over a few music files to see if that works.

You haven't confirmed yet that you have formatted the USB stick using FAT32 on a PC yet. Please confirm you have done this. If you have used the NTFS file system then it very likely won't be read by the head unit. NTFS is the default file system on later PCs, so needs to be changed.

As for your files capacity question, the number of files is dependent on USB capacity - but more that you would ever likely need - probably 1000s of files. Your issue is either a corrupt USB media, or the file system is not recognised as mentioned already.

When formatting the USB stick make sure you do a full format and not a quick format.

WRT the maximum number of files it seems to depend on what system you're using and, possibly, what firmware is installed. On SMEG+ systems the maximum seems to be about 4,000. On the eMyWay (RT6) system I found a lower limit of somewhere between 1000 to 2000 although memory is a bit vague on this. I found this out when I noticed that the track listings stopped in the letter Ks.

One more thing I've thought of. Don't go in for very long file names or file names with strange characters. Stick to alphanumeric with the occasional dash, comma or full stop.

Finally, don't put all the files in the root of the pen drive. Put them in folders off the root.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Hello,
I've formatted the USB stick in Ubuntu (Linux). I only did the quick format. I formatted it to EXFAT and nothing else. I didn't use NTFS. I'm going to try and put half of the music, which is all Classical, onto 2 USB sticks. I have carefully notated them in files off root. I will format the second USB stick fully.

You need to format it to FAT32! FAT32 is more widely supported and specifically asked for the Connected NAV systems. I think we've mentioned this enough times now, and it's what I mentioned in my first post.

Ubuntu will format to FAT32. I do my USB dongles with it so they play in my car (music only).

Hello,
I have formatted the stick using Ubuntu and it has formatted it to FAT32. And both sticks now play perfectly in the car.
