V6 Auto Box oil change

HP20 Gearbox Oil Change:

Drain

ESSENTIAL: The gearbox must be drained when the oil is hot ( 80 °C minimum), to eliminate the impurities suspended in the oil.

N.B.: The oil change is partial, since the converter cannot be totally drained.

Remove:

• Oil dipstick
• The drain plug (1)

Refilling
Engine flywheel retaining pin (1).
Filling is through the dipstick tube.
Use a funnel with a very fine filter (mesh of 0,15 mm maximum).

ESSENTIAL: Do not fill with fluid other than the recommended fluid.

Total oil capacity	7,7 litres (minimum). 8,3 litres (max.)
Oil remaining after draining	4,7 litres (minimum). 5,3 litres (max.)
Quantity of oil to be replaced	3 litres (approx.)

Refit the oil dipstick.

Oil Level Check

Prior conditions:

• Vehicle on a level surface
• Hot oil (minimum 80 °C)
• Apply the brakes firmly and move the lever through the various selector positions
• Selector lever in position "P"
• Engine running

The oil level must be between the mini " a" and "b" maxi marks.

ESSENTIAL: The fluid level must never be above the max mark .

Too high a fluid level can cause:

• Overheating of the fluid
• Fluid leaks

Too low a level causes destruction of the gearbox.

First an AM6 for a Xantia/XM now the oil level procedure for the old version of the 4HP20 (like mine) with the dipstick when Nikola specifically says he has the later version with no dipstick...

To check the oil level on the later 4HP20 with no dipstick you use the level plug - and from memory the temperature that you check the oil level at is quite a lot lower than the 80C for the dipstick version. I want to say 55C (as measured by a Lexia) but I wouldn't bet my house on it as it's been many years since I've seen the document.

Like any level plug you try to add oil through a hose into the level plug hole while the car is on level ground until it dribbles out and continues to dribble out when the hose is removed, then let it keep dribbling until it stops then refit the plug. (All with the gearbox at the correct temperature, whatever that is, and engine idling)

There is an addendum for the 4HP20 manual which covers the deletion of the dipstick and I'm certain that someone has posted it here on the forum before (as I've seen it and read it before) but after a quick look I haven't been able to find it, nor has a quick Google search turned up a copy elsewhere.

My suggestion to Nikola is to keep searching every thread on this forum referencing the 4HP20 - somewhere among them there is a file attachment or link to the 4HP20 dipstick addendum.

I was close, the correct temperature is 60C.

I only put that guide up in the absence of any further info.... and considering the topic is very old and is talking about HP20s and AL4s.....

@Nikola: In future, it may help if you pop your VIN up - it will save a lot of time.

If thinking of fitting a used (or rebuilt) transmission, take note that the more common Xantia/406 version of the 4HP20 has different gear ratios and will not work in an XM.

What symptoms does you transmission have?

Tnx to all as i found in my xm v6 24 v is gearbox from xantia v6 and it work fine except When goes to high rpm 6000 or 6500 rpm.
So I found good a used gearbox from 1999 Peugeot 406 coupe from v6 and I don’t know how will work in xm
Part number list for 406 gearbox is 1019000041
And on my xm, xantia gearbox is 1019000044
Can anyone can help me about it.
And now my gearbox totally stopped working about 100 km from last oil change
