Bolt head size

Post by randomandy »

I'm trying to replace the ABS sensor on the right rear corner of my Peugeot 207. I can't work out what the correct size of tool is for removing it. It looks like it is a Torx head bolt but none of my Torx bits fit.

Any ideas?

Not sure what the correct one is. T30 doesn't seem to bite and T40 is too big. None of my sets of Torx bits have a T35 which I take to mean bolts that size are fairly rare. Mind you, being a French car...

This relates to my post at viewtopic.php?t=70091&sid=48ba0e6fae527 ... 2761835d59, do you have an exploded diagram or part information that describes the bolt that holds the rear ABS sensor in? Struggling to find the right tool to extract it and might have to resort to brute force and mole grips!

I don't unfortunately.

I would use a little penetrating spray, making sure not to get any on the discs or pads and leave it for a day or so before trying again.

It was probably T30 originally. Hammer in an Allen key, use a reverse flute socket, weld a nut on it, easy out...plenty of options. In all probability it will just snap off anyway and you will end up drilling it out, so you could just argue for cutting out the middle man and going straight in with the drill!!

With a lot of WD40, a T40 bit and some percussive maintenance I have managed to get the bolt out. Next challenge is the old sensor as it doesn't want to come out. Once the electrical end is disconnected it may be coming out in pieces.

Yep, they rarely want to come out, Just attack it with a suitable chisel till you get the guts out, then drill / clean out what is left in the hole.

All done - including removing about half a ton of mud from the underside of the car!

Had a slight moment when I fired the engine up whilst the car was still missing a wheel as the ABS warning came up again but it seems to have gone away now it has been for a test drive.

One less thing for the MOT to be failed on!

That 'fault' is normal. If the ABS has gone into an error state due to a failed sensor it wants to 'see' there is now a working sensor in place before it will go back to normal. This caught me out when I had to replace a sensor on a Xantia; I spent ages trying to figure out what I had done wrong, but the moment she went over 6MPH the ABS light went out.
