U1218 Fault Code & potential cause - USB

Post by Micetro »

Hello all,

First post here for many years, I did have a Saxo VTR which was a brilliant little thing and I always got great advice on the forum so thought I would ask again.

I now have a 308 GT Line SW with the 2.0l e-HDI motor.

Loving it so far except for the constant U1218 Communication Fault with built-in systems interface error code that I can't get rid of now I have a code reader/reset app.

I have a feeling that this probably occurred a couple of months ago when I hadn't realised that my magnetic USB cable had picked-up a lot of steel filings at work and when I connected the phone to the USB cable it caused the screen to shut-down and restart, since then neither USB port is working. I suspect it shorted-out briefly so I have checked fuses but couldn't find anything untoward. Can anybody give me any pointers as to what to try please?

Another thing I have to mention is that the Stop-Start is not functioning and I understand that it is part of the same system, looking at other posts about this fault code, is there a system setting to disable Stop-Start or is it more likely that it has been bodged by cutting wires and causing the error code?

Many thanks for looking

Tom

There can be many reasons why the Stop Start won't work, including battery health and other factors, so may not be related, but your U1218 fault is an issue with the intersystems CAN. See the description below. There may have been damaged caused as a result of the metal filings creating shorts - hard to say exactly what - but while the fault is present you won't be able to clear it no matter how many times you try - until it is remedied.

Fault Code: U1218
Description of Fault: Intersystems CAN: One of the parameters present in a datastream sent by the BSI is invalid. Faults in communication between ECUs on the CAN network.

For this fault to occur, at least oneof the following conditions must be true:
- Ignition switched on
- Engine running
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: None
Symptoms:
  • Jerking/stalling
  • Starting problem
  • Lack of power
Suspect Areas:
  • Engine ECU
  • Intersystem CAN network

Thanks Marc,

Typically a mile from work just as I'd come off the dual carriageway I have now had code U059e appear.

I refilled the FAP fluid and serviced the car yesterday then reset the service light, cleared all faults codes and opened the fuel filler cap to trigger the FAP system so I'll have to jack it up after work and investigate. Could the NoX sensor on this circuit be dirty after the FAP fluid ran down?

Regards Tom

Did you reset the additive counter too?

Pop your VIN up for me (automasked on submission) so I know what engine / options we are talking about.

Hi Tom

Ok, so fault U059E is specifically related to the NOx sensor and the official guidance in the presence of this fault is a straight out and out replacement.

Your vehicle only has the one downstream NOx sensor by the looks of it as it's a Euro 6.1 engine. Euro 6.2 engines have an additional upstream NOx sensor.
