sphere regasser

Post by DoubleChevron »

Hi Guys,
has anyone here made a sphere regasser. I'm thinking it would be quite easy if you own a lathe. Has anyone out there made one??.
I have made a sphere tester (any idiot can make these with a spanner given a couple of hours), but a gasser .... That could be interesting.

Post your pictures, please brethren of home made hydraulic test gear. Lots of us would like to build our own.

Hi Tom,
mine is certainly nothing flash. It will take about 2hours to screw a pump/regulator/reseviour to a board.
I found a pressure guage at a local market for about 2quid. I went upto the local hydraulics shop with a bit of 4.5mm Citroen hose with a bubble flare at each end and asked them to make the guage fit. They grabbed a hand full of brass fittings, cut/flared one end of the pipe and fitted the guage for 5quid.
I have literally 1dozen pumps around the place, I grabbed a 7cylinder pump as they have a nut on the pulley that I use to turn the pump. The pump to reseviour pipe I just pulled from a GS wreck. The reseviour if from the same GS wreck (CX's have a dome shaped bottom so will not sit level).
All you do is chuck the sphere to be tested on, spin the pump a few times to clear the air. Tighten the regulator bleed screw and spin the pump a few times. The guage will rapidly rise to the pressure left in the sphere.
Then you just release the regulator bleed screw and fit the next sphere to be tested.

Made a sphere tester myself using same approach - also using a CX pump.
Installed a washing machine motor (1ph 230V 350W) to try wind up the pressure. Nope [:I] - need to gear it down - or get a higher wattage motor [:I]
But at least I only have to turn pump some 2-3 turns to get the PR shut off.
Never ever found a decent gauge though - might not be available in my City area.
For the regasser I got some pics years ago from a good friend. Lost the pictures on my old crashed PC. (One always takes a backup huh [:o)])
It was indeed a simple setup :
The sphere is basically fixated in a solid square frame - then a filler cup with a through ranging tool for the filler cap is pressed on to the sphere. The sphere is then trapped inside the frame.
The filler cup has fittings for connections to a HP tap, gauge nad N-gas flask.
Press on the filler cup, unwind sphere filler cap, open tap on flask, let in some pressure, open a vent valve (to vent out air), then fill to required pessure. Now close sphere filler cap and remove sphere from setup.
Filler cup and and tap tool same basic principle as the BX front brakes caliper with the handbrake rod ranging through.
A standard industry N-gas flask is rather expensive around here. Really would need to fill quite some spheres to make it an economical approach.

Hi Anders,
the best pressure tester I've ever seen is one buttercup bob made out here. He can make just about anything as he's got a lathe, milling machine, plasma cutter, MIG etc, etc, etc (and knows how to use them).
Take one tiny 1ton bottle jack. turn a thread onto the top of the bottle jack, attach a sphere extension with a pressure guage on it, drill a hole through the jack extension so it will not lift.... Talk about simple, you pump the jack handle until you get the sphere pressure, release the jack (ie: let it down) and remove the sphere. The best bit is it's size. It's only as big as a (tiny) 1ton bottle jack. You put brake fluid in one bottle jack and LHM in the other. That way you have a tester for both fluids.
BTW: You don't need to drive them. 5turns of the pump is enough to test a 75bar from CX sphere. I just use a socket on a 'speed bar' (you know looks like a wheel brace). Forget the motors, you don't need them !!!
seeya,
Shane L.
PS: The pressure guages are only about $55aud brand new for a calibrated fluid filled guage !!!

I found this swedish description of a pressure tester and sphere regasser:

Not the same as I had the pictures of. But much the same design idea.
This one has a better grip on closing the sphere cap.

I found this some time ago, I suppose it would be more useful if you spoke Japanese.

Thanks Guys,
those regassers certainly look simple. It does like like you need a lathe to make one though :(
I'll try to find a conversion program for those web pages later.

Those other readers are good. The jack one would be the best. The reason I made mine though is no cutting/welding/lathe work is required. It's all simple standard parts, and is still quite compact (not to mention extremelly simple to use). No doubt if I owned a lathe I'd make one of those bottle jack testers. While I have so many hydraulic parts sitting around doing nothing, I might as well use them.
If you needed to purchase the pump, regulator and resevoir from a wreckers, it would probably be quite expensive. Best is to find someone wrecking heaps of cars and see if they'll donate you the required parts.

I have also a testbed drawing in a DS workshop manual. I'll try to digitise it and post only.
But the jack is very good. Take a rear ram from a BX (for instance), which already has the sphere nut and barometer fitting (LHM intake), and weld it to the jack. Hmmm, i think i'm gonna make one, just for fun[:P]

A DS front sphere extension would be easier. You would only need to weld one end to the top of the jack (after ensure the jack can't lift by removing it's piston or drilling a hole in it).

I googled and found a couple of translation services that handle swedish to english:
This seems to give a reasonable result:
http://www.systransoft.com/
This one probably makes the text less understandable (even for Swedes):
