Legislation that could wreck our hobby?

Post by mickthemaverick »

I was watching a video on The Missenden Flyer's site which was his round up of last month's bike news as published in MotorCycleNews (MCN). One particular article grabbed my attention. :?: :!: The government are in consultation about banning tampering (modifying) motor vehicles. They claim it is for safety reasons with the oncoming arrival of autonomous vehicles but there is general concern, including my own, that it may cover far more areas than autonomous vehicles.   I am 100% against any such legislation which may threaten aspects of our hobby like replacing stereos or adding extras etc so I have completed the consultation questionaire accordingly. The more people that do so, the better chance we have of maintaining our liberty. You can find the full details at this link: :? :?

Well I've just filled that in - but for other reasons in addition Mick.

Pleaded for a common sense approach and to ensure they are more specific (including examples) of their proposals as currently this can mean anything - which is what I think they like. They must limit any interventions to safety and not to include things like customising your wheels or adding an accessory - for example as at present the proposals are so vague.

Zero Emission Vehicles are also part of the consultation.
As part of the review, we’re also consulting on:
maritime autonomy and remote operations
future of flight
regulatory sandboxes
modernising vehicle standards
You’re welcome to provide feedback on as many topics as are relevant to your areas of interest and expertise.
I think I'll remain ignorant of what a regulatory sandbox is on a "dont need to know basis" :-D

You only have a few weeks to reply to the consultations and after that bleating when the s*** hits the fan will be to late. Some items are perfectly ok but others are too vague and wide ranging to allow through on the off chance that it won't affect you. Or your job/livelihood/wallet!

Ford USA actively encouraging "tampering" :?: They hope to encourage folk with their beloved old gas F150's to tamper away to their hearts content, and shove one of their mach-e crate motors into vehicles not originally designed to take them, plus of course battery packs, inverters and controllers.
They've even shown what can be done with this F100 conversion
