For the first day of October 2021, a seasonal tune, if a touch melancholy, and the annual apprearance on the FCF of the flugelhorn. Many many versions of this standard...but the version here doesnt need the words, it transmits through the music alone the feeling of the words trooped out in French by Yves Montand or by Nat King Cole and countless others in English.

Bit of poetry for the first day of November

You may have heard of Robert Burns, and may even be familiar with the first few lines of one of his most famous poems. You may think the Poem is called "To a Mouse" but no give it its full title.

"To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest With the Plough, November, 1785 "

Its quite remarkable how the words live on from a chance event 236 years ago. Until this morning I had never read it past the first verse, but it is a tremendous piece of observation, writing, and the bit at the end very true

"the best laid plans of mice and men gan aft aglee, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, For promis'd joy!"

and the telling contrast he observes between the mouse living in the present, while he casts his eye back on "prospects drear" and forward though he cannot see, by "guess and fear".

Wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim'rous beastie,
O, what a pannic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murd'ring pattle!
I'm truly sorry man's dominion,
Has broken nature's social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An' fellow-mortal!
I doubt na, whiles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen icker in a thrave
'S a sma' request;
I'll get a blessin wi' the lave,
An' never miss't!
Thy wee bit housie, too, in ruin!
It's silly wa's the win's are strewin!
An' naething, now, to big a new ane,
O' foggage green!
An' bleak December's winds ensuin,
Baith snell an' keen!
Thou saw the fields laid bare an' waste,
An' weary winter comin fast,
An' cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell-
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro' thy cell.
Thy wee bit heap o' leaves an' stibble,
Has cost thee mony a weary nibble!
Now thou's turn'd out, for a' thy trouble,
But house or hald,
To thole the winter's sleety dribble,
An' cranreuch cauld!
But, Mousie, thou art no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!
Still thou art blest, compar'd wi' me
The present only toucheth thee:
But, Och! I backward cast my e'e.
On prospects drear!
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess an' fear!

Hope you enjoyed Rabbie's November Classic Poetry, I certainly did.

Time for a bit of music. Plenty songs with November in, uninspired by any of the artists/titles. Tom Waits has one called "November" not listened to it might be OK, and then there is Max Richter with a modern classic which for those who like it they rave about it. Easily found "Max Richter November" on youtube if you want to give it a try. Very difficult piece to play for the violinist.

But looking for the forces of randomness to produce a track suitable for November, I wil use random.org to select a year between 1960 and 2021. I will then consult the official UK singles chart for the week including 1st November and choose a track from the list to bring forward to our first day thread.

So part 1 whats the Year :?:

Part 2 the Chart
https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/s ... 1031/7501/

Part 3 the Selection
That must be the weakest chart ever assembled in the United Kingdom from my point of view. Attempts to select tracks at random have resulted in complete failure of any threshold of interestingness.

I am almost forced to to go down the lulu and take that selection, but reluctantly I've plumped for this

Sorry Neil, while I agree it is a poor chart to pick from, I think Tom Petty's version of Thunderclap Newman's classic gets my vote:

"Cold, Cold Ground" gets my vote for Tom Waits songs - or "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" - but sung by Holly Cole.

I will post this here although I was tempted to put it in Room 101. On my way home from Elstree this morning I found myself following a 'Highways Maintenance' transit pickup crewcab. with various handtools and what looked like a chipping machine in the back!! As we went along a narrow lane I was surprised to see him brake suddenly and then slew to the right and carry on down the lane and away. Once he had got round the problem I could see for myself where the local residents had done their best to keep the road open. I simply could not understand why the crew did not stop and make a better job of it!!!! Probably their tea break was due or something !! :-D

Second Verse please John to accompany a few December 1st 2021 original images
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
