Peugeot 407 steering angle sensor issue

Post by coldnorth »

Hi folks!

First post here as I've just recently purchased a very cheap 407 with various faults on that did not go through the MOT. Mainly been working with German and American cars before so this French thing is new to me.
Was planning on lending it to my son that will get his license in a few months.

Got most issues sorted but one still remains and I need some help with that. The steering angle sensor seems to have issues, C1135 and C1388, throwing all sorts of warnings and ESP/ABS lights.

As I got a replacement COM2003 together with the car, I changed it yesterday. Process went ok but I was not able to calibrate it afterwards, using Diagbox 9.91 and also tried my IcarSoft equipment.

Looking closer at the parameters, the angle sits still at 720 degrees and there is no feedback on left/right or speed of turn.

So what to do now? Get another unit and change again? Or go further into wiring issues? Anyone with a wiring diagram for this sensor?

Is there a way of measuring the sensor while on the bench?

Any help appriciated

Did you replace the Comm unit with the exact correct part - these need to be specific.

C1388 is basically saying the initialisation has not been completed - and C1135 is an internal sensor fault. So it is entirely possible that C1135 is as a result of the calibration not being undertaken.

I assume PP2000 has launched from Diagbox for the 407 being a 2005 year model?

All your ESP / ABS warnings will be related to the steering wheel angle sensor as it relies on this for trajectory information and things like speed of turn for example.

Hi Marc and thanks for the reply.

The PP2000 works fine with Diagbox if that what you ment?

The COM2003 units are both marked 96476537XT and soft 2.0 so I believe they are equal. All codes and parameter readings was the same with the old and new unit, it might have been changed once before by previous owner who did a lot of work on the car , probable without enough knowledge..

In Diagbox I get all information ok and it reads the production date of the new unit correct (21.03.2005).

Car VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Ok, so have you actually undertaken the calibration routine? It is a guided procedure that you have to follow using the car with Diagbox / PP2000 connected. This must be done each time the steering wheel angle sensor is changed which it will be if you have replaced it.

Yes, tried many times following the procedure in Diagbox, turning the wheel 1/4 turn each way, also tried turning fully both way etc, every time with an error.

I would believe I could get a reading in the diagnostic graph even if it was not calibrated properly?

When it's been calibrated you should get the angle measurements, otherwise I can't see how it can report the angles correctly.

Of course the opposite could also be true in my previous post - in that if the sensor itself is faulty, then it will never be able to be calibrated...

Try these - they have both new and refurbished units if you suspect a used one is faulty:

Thanks for the replies and link.

Before I dish out more money on this, I would like to investigate a bit more on the wiring and signal paths. Anyone with a wiring diagram or link to such?

I don't understand the process you followed, I imagine the system is the same as a C5, part of the calibration process called for the car to drive 100m in a perfectly straight line with the lexia plugged in.
Marc, Does this sound about right for the 407?
