Asked This Before, But... NEW Info about VED

Post by Doo »

Hi all, I own a 2012 Berlingo stop start 8 valve X TR that USED to be a taxi.

Recent mot showed emissions as 0.51 (tester said it was cleanest he'd seen in ages) wifes C4 from 2007 WAS 0.09 which clearly is a tad cleaner.... Her's is 16v which isn't stop/start mine is the 8v version which is stop/start (and seriously irritating when the traffic is stopped for all of one or two seconds  ).

However, I pay £125 PA in road tax (because lets face it, it's STILL a tax to use the network) whereas my wife pays £30 PA.

Now, I've asked this before, but reading the latest Car Mechanics magazine, they have bought a 2011 Citroen DS3 1.6 HDi with a £20 PA tax bill.

Now my car is apparently an E-HDi with 0 road tax, yet I am being fleeced for £125 PA and am as you'd expect, a bit miffed.

I discovred my car "was" a taxi at some point, so my question is (and believe me I have tawled the net) is it more exensive because it was a taxi (it is NOT a taxi now, I've covered around 2k miles since March).

Obviously, I want to be absolutely sure I am not paying extra when I needn't have to. But surely a 0 emissions car should not be paying the same as a 76/90g/km car?!?!?!?!

Pretty sure, last time I looked, 0.51 is still LESS than 1 (to 50) so I SHOULD be paying £0 :!:

Can anyone clear this up for me as trying to get through to DVLA is nigh on im poss eeeblay
Has anyone seen the plot? :?

I'm not sure where you are getting the £0 road tax from???

Your car is an HDi DV6DTED 92 BHP. It's not an E-HDi. It is under the Euro 5 legislation. I believe your tax band is 'D' for this vehicle, but you can check the CO2 g/km, as it should be written on the V5 registration document.

The C3 we recently sold was a 2007 1.6 16V HDi DV6ATED4, and that produced 118 CO2 g/km and was only £30 a year to tax.

The tax rate for Band 'C' goes from 111 to 120 g/km and that's the £30 tax band.
The Tax rate for band 'D' goes from 121 g/km to 130 g/km and that's the £130 tax band.

So prepared to be fleeced for another fiver as it's £130 now not £125! :-D

0.51 relates to the exhaust opacity (i,.e. smoke) level and is nothing to do with the tax setting CO2 level. This table: https://car-emissions.com/cars/model/Ci ... space/2012 suggests CO2 of 139 or 135 depending on age, which suggests it should be in band E at £155....

I beg to differ... Unless someone installed stop start and an 8 valve engine after registration

And here's the reg to show I'm not pretending it's a different car :-D

So you can understand why I am confused :?

Can't find the document wallet just now, but I will... (We recently moved house so it's still a mystery where things are  ).

EDIT: Found the docs. On V5 it states it is a Berlingo Multispace XTR E-HDIA

Ok, so there were several other models with e-hdi that had different engines - but regardless, the emissions info I gave is the same and the engine I quoted is correct.

Your CO2 emissions are 125 g/km so that is Band 'D' and the current duty is shown as £130 per year.

So a big difference in tax for a 7 g/km difference between a 118 g/km C3 and yours .....

So is it going by NOx? Because the figures are confusing. My car is showing 68KW and all the emissions figures are 0. whatever. The only one that matches is the NOx at 0.157.

My Aircross only emits 105 g/km, but falls under the new post 2017 rules, so I pay £160 according the Government's VED tables online. Although it meets the stricter Euro 6 RDE2 standards, it's still better than the £180 I'd be paying if it wasn't RDE2 compliant.

Incidentally, the online tables may be a £5 out as they are showing them to be £5 more than the online real-time check I've just done, so you may yet save that extra £5! :-D

No, it's CO2. NOx is what is measured at the MOT and too high a value can fail the car - but it's the CO2 that's the measure of the tax you pay in grammes per KM.

Here's the table for your car (and bear in mind some values may be a £5 too much)

NOx is not measured at MOT - diesel test is smoke opacity only.

It's my understanding the new rules do Richard:

"Not only has the way you pass or fail the test changed, but also the way emissions are tested have been updated too. The previous emissions test - the New European Cycle (NEDC) - was implemented in the 1980s and has been criticised for its use in the 21st century. The new test - The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) - has been designed to be tougher than its predecessor on measuring both fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Measuring the amount of nitrous oxide (NOx) is the Real Driving Emissions test (RDE) and as a result, diesel cars may struggle with this part of the test as their emissions are higher in NOx than petrol."

RDE is only part of the type approval testing, MOT test is still only smoke: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspect ... tion-8-2-2

We'll all be doomed by 2030 anyway if they get their way - I just hope they've properly sorted the electric alternatives out by then.

They will have done, for themselves, at least. Those down in the gutters (in their eyes) are not worth bothering with.
