C5 C6 407 2.7 HDi DT 17 Disaster on LR Discovery
I thought I'd put a link up here to a Youtube channel I enjoy watching. Christian and Vera - from LR Time are the comedy duo who always make me laugh in their videos, regardless of the latest disaster! They have Land Rover Discoveries and make various videos on maintenance and upgrades - but this is the latest disaster from their friend Fabian's vehicle.
I'm putting this up primarily as as it concerns the same DT17 2.7 V6 engine found in the C6, the C5 X7 and 407 as is in the Discovery 3, and some Jags.
The mechanics may find this interesting as it concerns oil starvation on the crank bearings / shells and how it shafted the engine. Worse, was what the Land Rover dealership did when it was transported there ....
It's an interesting watch, so grab a coffee:

Re: C5 C6 407 3.0 HDi DT 17 Disaster on LR Discovery
** It is a Disco 3, so it has the older 2.7 V6 HDI
Just watched the first bit, but it seems the first owner followed the 30000km service interval.
Which will kill ANY engine with a turbo.. Works within the warranty period and gives low TCO, but the engine may be dooomed!
30000km may work in a low tech NA engine, ex a EW10J4 or a Volvo B230 with modern high quality oil.
SAAB had 30kkm service interval on their cars in the 00's
This (plus other issues) meant that almost every mechanic in Sweden has changed a turbo on a SAAB with 2.0t/2.3t engines (95/93 mk1)

Yes, thanks, I corrected my post and title to change it to the 2.7, but 30k service interval is crazy!
Looking forward to part 2

That seems to be the case - did you clock the Land Rover / Jag estimate for repairs? 20k+ euros......

I'll watch with some trepidation in the knowledge my 130k miles C6 might be heading the same way...
I'm steeling myself to rip the engine out and change the pump and bearings as a preventative measure!
It'll have to wait awhile as it just popped a suspension strut and the parts bill for that alone is going to be £600, ouch!!

Watched the whole video over dinner and it was really interesting.
Though i have'nt heard of any failures in C5 C6 or 407/607:s
They are not common, but often do big miles..

Plenty of C6's on mainland Europe with spun bearings. I think it's linked to service interval, heat and a heavy right foot....

Re: C5 C6 407 2.7 HDi DT 17 Disaster on LR Discovery
That kind of service interval is inviting trouble, especially on a powerful turbo diesel.
Found that a fascinating video, with some important cautions about prolonged and ineffective cranking.
It follows that if you do need to jump-start your vehicle, the engine should be spun-up at speed, and not allowed to grind on. Even fast cranking can raise oil pressure (I remember from oil pressure gauge equipped cars), which has to be beneficial.

Re: C5 C6 407 2.7 HDi DT 17 Disaster on LR Discovery
HDi240 250000 km and counting. I´ve done oil changes at 10000km intervals after 200000km. Crank bearings do like good oil on these engines.
Re: C5 C6 407 2.7 HDi DT 17 Disaster on LR Discovery
This is really interesting, I'm lucky going for the 2.2HDI in the XF. The 3.0 V6 HDI suffers from blown plastic inlet manifolds and crank and bottom end bearing failure in JLR models. I think this is due to JLR specifying a very low SPAS engine oil C1 spec which these engines were never designed for and their blocks are different as they have different mounts compared to the way they are installed in front wheel drive PSA cars. I also think the long mileage intervals are a significant contributory factor to early engine death. I still wonder where my old C5 is. Excellent forum still.

Nearly 3000€ parts only.
It´s crapyard-time if this happens.

... but did you see in the video what Jag / LR wanted? €20,000, when they likely contributed to the damage by running the car again!

Just saw this XF with same problem on finnish car-sales site: https://www.nettiauto.com/jaguar/xf/12237882
A bit steep price concidering how much repair costs.
