Spoiler: show
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had a night out in Fettercairn at the Ramsay Arms
A memorial archway erected in 1864 commemorates the 1861 visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, while staying at Balmoral

The PM in question would be 4 times Prime Minister William Gladstone
This was the family Estate was in and around Fettercairn including acquisition of the Whisky Distillery

In 1829, Ramsay's Fasque estate, on which the distillery buildings sit, was sold to the Gladstone family. Their most famous son was William Gladstone – British Prime Minister four times during the late nineteenth century. Gladstone was a great friend to the Scotch Whisky industry. He abolished the taxes on malt and the Angel’s Share, and introduced legislation allowing Scotch to be sold in glass bottles for the first time.

Back. Got what I needed

Anyway, here is the web page that encapsulates it all

https://www.britainexpress.com/attracti ... ction=5035

Fasque House was being used as a Wedding Venue for a while. Don't know if it still is. It has always had sporadic public opening times in al the years I have known about.
The Ramsay Arms is/was a nice place to eat and drink in.

It is often supposed that the Arches in Fettercairn, Edzell and Dundee were all linked in time and purpose, but they were not.
Edzell's Arch still stands and is magnificent and the area is well worth a delve. Dundee's Arch doesn't and they still don't know how to celebrate it.

Yes came across the "ell" on the wiki page for Fettercairn.

Presume its the same measure as the Dunkeld "ell", with the common or garden word elbow coming from it.

Ells could vary a bit. Hence the eventual practice of having an Ell measure in market places so you could calibrate your Ell to a locally held "standard Ell"

The plaque says it all.
