C5 Brake Tube

Unread post by c5_on_a_shoestring »

I got to the stage of the cable being totally stuck in the tube after squirting penetrating oil in the split in the cable outer that fits into the brake tube overnight.
I went out and purchased a new tube from Euro car care Derby. I read on the forum that it’s a case of undoing the heat shield then wiggle it out. I had to bend it a bit before I finally removed it with a bit of cursing 🤬. So now I have removed it, what is the best/easiest procedure to refitting the new tube? When removing the old tube it left the grommet and nylon sleeve behind. I notice the nylon sleeve has a one way lock clip either side where it clips into the bodywork.
Is that easy to remove or should I just pull the parts off the new tube? Saying that, the nylon sleeve is glued on well onto the brake tube.
Do you feed the new tube from the back, or from the front through the wheel arch, or do I need to undo the subframe? Any thoughts recommendations for the next steps much appreciated. 🙂

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your struggle with the hand brake cable tube. I think that there are those on here who have changed those and will be able to offer advice.

But if/when the otherside becomes un serviceable may i suggest you try the following:

Once the handbrake nuts have been released ready to remove the cable, clamp the broken cable under the wheel arch into the chuck of an electric drill, slowly rotate and pull at the same time. The cable will start to come out, once it becomes too long, just slide a suitable piece of tube over it to stop the cable knotting and carry on.
You may need two or three lengths.

Use these when running the new cable back into the tube with the drill. Grease/oil will help to protect the tube from rust etc.
There is a topic about this on the forum from when my son in law and I owned C5's some years ago if you can find it.

Hope that will be of some help.
Andy
